No Flatpaks arent like portable windows apps, they serve a different use case

for a portable apps for linux, look towads AppImages, they can run like a portable app and are super handy at times

Not really. Most users installing snaps have no idea if they contain malware, or for example use your computer to mine cryptocurrency for someone else (https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/8iupdz/caution_the_are_malware_snaps_in_ubuntu_snaps/). Snaps give Canonical control, but you lose your privacy, in terms of the Snap, and control in terms of your hardware.

There is for all intents and purposes no public scrutiny of Snaps.

The regime you live in is blocking Amazon Web Services. See http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/trusty/man5/apt.conf.5.html for how to proxy the apt http-requests.

Once you get apt up and running with a proxy I would recommend you to go back to the packaged version of Brave, since using the snap kinda violates the purpose of using Brave from the start.

Not gonna read through 4 pages so apologies if someone has already explained this before me.

The problem seems to come from Pop using a custom library (if you freeze the video you can see the offending library is libgbm1) to handle GPU buffer allocation. Installing Steam apparently overrides this with the default library and in doing so breaks several dependencies with Pops DE which gets uninstalled as a result.

Honestly, this is a Pop issue, not a Linux issue. They should be shipping the Steam Runtime package and not the Steam Native package. The former is essentially Steam but with static versions of all its dependant libraries self contained, the latter uses system installed libraries.

Honestly though, they probably should just be using the default library to begin with.

This frankly. I don't know why people recommend distros like Manjaro or PopOS! to new users when they're relatively niche distros with not a lot of official support and backing. Fedora and Ubuntu are two user friendly choices with a lot of support. You can make changes to them so that they run games just like PopOS! would, but since you're making the changes, you'll learn what you're doing.

That Rage comic funnily enough brought me back to the last time I tried to daily drive Ubuntu for high school computer science. It was great for coding, but not much else.

Might as well give Linux another try on a separate drive. I've been feeling adventurous lately, anyway.

yea, I knew that DE issue was going to happen
when those packages showed up in the terminal error I knew it was inevetible.

The real question is why dafaq did installing steam force the DE to uninstall itself?

Yes the issue was not updating the OS before trying to install steam. But that's the whole point of this section being illustrative of the problem, you install your OS, you don't get a prompt to install updates, you try to install steam, you run into a weird error, you google for that error, and what you find is "force install it", not "your repos might be out of date, update and retry".

It doesn't say "this will delete your DE", it says "it might break things" but with zero information as to what/how/why or if it actually will or not... and forcing this is actually the "correct" solution in some cases, leading to that being found in searches.

    a few reasons.
    - they include weird stuff like an in-house power management thing. great when it works, super bad when it doesn't as there's almost no documentation on how to turn it off or yeet it when it causes problems.
    - the packages they use are curated by them, not by Ubuntu's team. that means you can get newer stuff and newer nvidia drivers in some cases, but those aren't validated for that version of ubuntu and can cause massive issues.
    - they also include in-house gnome extentions. again, great when they work, but when they don't the official gnome documentation won't help you as the setup is not stock. to be clear Ubuntu has modified gnome too, but it has such a large install base that troubleshooting is relatively easy.

and last but certainly not least i've found it to be very unpredictable and breaking things on it's own, like Linus showed us in the video 🤣

    @simon.gauvinMerged to video thread.

He did search for the issue and bypassing the warning was a solution found on the net, just not to the right problem. Totally realistic situation in the "new user" context.

It says that this shouldn't be done unless "you know exactly what you are doing".
He must have done that voluntarily for the video.

    Oh boy !
Can't say that I'm surprised about sound issues, but that steam install on Pop!OS is a level of bullshit I did not expect.
Also I'd be interested to know what was the deal with the first game Linus tried, the Steam page clearly says it has a Linux native port so things should work out of the box...
