    It's a win, but the battle isn't over it.

    We now know that they may have to power to potentially DRM mods. We will also never know when this will come back. The damage is done.

    I wonder what would happen if they monetize gta v mods.

    HiiraTeruyo reacted to Izomo in What separates Linus' ad placements from others
    I've been watching linus tech tips for alittle over a year now. And one thing I've noticed is that they handle their ad placements WAY differently then other youtubers. For example audible with linus vs with amazingatheist:

    You can immediately tell that the ad placement in the amazingatheists video is an ad, cut, dry, and a simple ad placement. But with linus' ad placement you can tell that he actually is using it, having fun with the ad placement, and is more engaging and personal.

    Another explain is with Squarespace with linus vs with The Young Turks.

    With The Young Turks it's
    Dry Impersonal Uninformative Painful to watch With Linus
    Fun Engaging/personal Informative  Actually enjoyable to watch Some people are going to say "who cares they are just ad placements, stop trying to suck up to linus", and they may be right. But when you watch 10+ videos with ad placements that are all boring and dry then it's awesome to see someone that has fun with it and makes it a better watching experience.

    All in all this is just a post to say thank you to linus and his team for making ad placements a good experience and actually things that I want to use, if I had the money.

    Also this is not an attack on the young turks or amazingatheist, they just provide good examples.

    I have some
    I told my Dad in Nivember that I wanted a gaming PC for my 13th birthday. He said that for christmas he would give me money to build one. So a week before christmas he travels down to Markham Ontario to see his sister. On christmas, I openend my present and saw a computer, along with a monitor. After setup, he told me that he bought it from Futureshop (even though I told him NCIX) and they said it is a high end gaming computer. He said that he was told that VGA was the best monitors out there. The specs of the system? Asus GT 620 2GB, i7-3770, 16 GB of ram and a 2TB hard drive. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. He finally buys me a CX500M and a GTX 760. I go to instal it, and it doesn't post. Bring it into the Futureshop where I live, they told me that my Dad shouldn't of payed 1000 for it and happily fixed it (well I still have to wait a week because the mobo still hasn't arrived)
    A kid in my class asked me what system I play on. I say PC. He says that Xbox is better. I say you don't have to pay to go online. His response? Thats why Xbox is better. How is the PC makers going to make money?
    Another one said if you build a computer, its crap, unless its Alienware.

    A women and her two daughters came into the phone repair shop I worked in. Both the daughters had ipod touch's and said that they couldn't install any apps because ios firmware was out of date and asked us to fix it for them. We simply updated the ipods through itunes. We charged them 40 dollars each.

    oh, oh I have a good one, my sisters "tech master" boyfriend said that minecraft is a huge virus and that it is a problem on their laptop, (it is installed so my niece can play on my server) he says that the connection to my server in installing viruses and keeps uninstalling minecraft, but he never even looks twice at the limewire they use to get music and videos. and they don't even run any antivirus, they uninstalled the free version of avg I put on their laptop because it was a virus too according to him.

    occasionally i like going into my local pc world and watch there sales team sell low end pc's at inflated prices and listen to the patter they use to sell em...
    then when they go to get there payment plans or some other bits and bobs, i walk over and tell em to look on the web for better hardware at the same or lesser price...
    reason?... because it sickens me to see people deliberately being ripped of because they dont know the difference between a gts 450 and a gtx 680. 1 guy was gonna pay £145 for a cheap end gfx card which retailed elsewhere for £79.99 (gts 650) thinking it was cool because he had just been told it had 2 gigs of vram. i pointed out that the vram has little to do with overall performance and he needs to know how many cuda cores the card has. i then pointed him to a cheaper 660 gtx from ebuyer only 1 gig. he walked away happy but the salesman wasnt. i got escorted out the shop and told not to return lol....

    One of the new kids last year, in the same year level as me (9), had done a research project and presented it to the class.
    The project was on why consoles are better than pc's.
    During his brief presentation, the outline for consoles being better was that the consoles had faster internets, which made "call of duty" run faster.
    Then he went on to say that the internets on pc were so slow that it couldn't even handle "call of duty" and just plain didn't work.
    I laughed at him so hard I was given detention

    Some guy at school: Xbox has such better graphics and stuff than pc.
    Me: then why is a pc usually more expensive?
    guy: i dunno... A controller is better for fps anyway.
    me: but it's less accurate and turning is slower, among other things.
    guy: yeah but it levels the playing field for everybody. Multiplayer games are more fair then.
    me: and some pc gamers don't use a keyboard and mouse?
    guy: well, no but...
    Some other guy: I built my own computer for 2000$. It can play crysis 1 on maximum.
    Me: so can my $700 laptop.
    I recently overheard a best buy geek squad guy tell some dude he should use vga on his pc for best results.
    NOOOOOOOO!!!

    I also made the mistake to start doing computer stuff for my friends and family. Everyone i've ever helped now thinks that i'm their personal support guy for everything. My top 5:
    5)
    Friend bought a SSD and installed it (he's not that of a noob). Still asked me why it wasn't reading with 450MB/s as promised, so i asked him if he used the fast sata-port on his board (labeled blue). He told me that he used the blue one, so i drove over to him, just to see that be had his HDD in the fast port and his SSD in the slow one.
    4)
    My mother told me that she wants a new computer, so i asked her if i should build her one. She said no and went to "Saturn" (like best-buy but in germany) and got a complete system there. She payed about 800$ for a system with an i3, a gtx 540, 4 gigs of ram and 500 gigs of harddrive space....
    3)
    A friend of mine made a steam account with a fake e-mail-adress. After buying 3 games with his pay-pal-account for ~120$ he restarted his computer, just to realize that he couldn't play the games because his mail was fake and he couldn't get into his steam-account anymore.
    2)
    After i built a computer for a friend of mine, he started complaining about the system bluescreening all the time. While checking his rig, i realized that he had removed the cpu-cooler (out of curiousity) and cleaned off the thermal paste because he thought it was dirty. So obviously his cpu got too hot and made his pc crash every time he booted up. Because he tried to boot up his system uncountable times, his 300$ i7 was broken too. Good job on that.
    1)
    My ex-girlfriend got a macbook pro. She turned it on for the first time and played around a while, after about 10 minutes she asked me where the Internet Explorer is because she wanted to surf the interwebz. I lol'd.

    HiiraTeruyo reacted to GoodBytes in PC not upgradable in a few years' time?
    Here is the thing. Linus is right and wrong.
    Some people upgrade their computer every 2-3 years... and by upgrade.. I mean change the CPU.. which changes the motherboard, which changes in many cases the RAM.

    A gaming PC, doesn't need to have it's CPU updated every 2-3 years. Beside the performance increase between a newer gen, especial these days, is tiny... (~10% at best) why? Because, it's no longer about speed, it's about efficiency.

    In reality, you can keep your CPU/Motherboard/RAM, assuming you go them to fit your needs well, on day 1, for 5 years.
    You'll definitely change the GPU once, but that's about it (maybe an SSD, if you didn't get the funds to get one in the first place, or something). Games, aren't very CPU demanding, that is why the push for speed has slowed down.

    Heck, PC software, are getting more and more fully GPU rendered, Microsoft being the big push for this, with: Modern UI app, Zune desktop app, Office 2013, for example. And many programs uses the GPU to accelerate things, like Adobe AfterEffects, PhotoShop, and many video conversion/encoding software.

    Also when you upgrade, you don't need to:
     -> Buy another license of Windows, unless you want to get some newer version
     -> Buy another optical drive
     -> Buy a new monitor, if yours is perfectly fine
     -> Speaker/keyboard/mouse/etc.
     -> Dedicated sound card
     -> Case
     -> RAM (in some cases)
     -> HDD/SSD
     -> Power Supply
     -> Even GPU, if you upgraded it recently.

    This is a lot of saving.
