Well what can I say, you're in for quite a shock once you enter the real world. You think any reputable game company will hire you without a degree from a top tier university? They don't care about your crappy indie games you developed by yourself, they care about what University you graduated from and what your GPA is. Do your fucking homework, get into to good university, then you can start building games and writing code.

As for OP, the only recent games I've played that weren't old JRPG's or visual novels is Dota 2 and Dark Souls 2. So yeah, if you want good graphics and great gameplay, I recommend Dark Souls.

I'm gonna have to strongly disagree on that one, the Japanese VA was worlds better than the dub IMO, especially Kyon. The dub for his internal monologues didn't capture his character IMO.
Also, the quality of Japanese dubs is generally much better simply because anime is such a huge industry there. The VA's focus their careers on anime voice acting, whereas for most dubbers in the US, anime is just a part of their job alongside other games movies or cartoons etc.
And my Japanese is nowhere near native speaker level but I can at least understand when the subs differ greatly from the original and frankly, have rarely encountered such a thing.
Not to mention fansubs are usually way better in terms of typesetting for stuff like signs, cell phones, papers, sound effects etc.
That being said, there are animes where the dub is better. Baccano and Black Lagoon come to mind, simply because the characters in those anime aren't Japanese so having the voice actors be the same nationality as the characters adds to the immersion. But 99% of the time I would prefer subbed, especially if one of my favorite voice actors has a role.

I would upgrade the monitor first before upgrading the GPU. R9-290X Is waaaay overkill for 1440x900 anyways.

Dohoho you're in for a big surprise. I can basically cry on command after watching Clannad AS, by simply thinking of different scenes. If you though Angel Beats was sad, then you'll cry your eyes out several times during After Story.
