  1. That's one way to keep people upgrading their GPUs. I just hope my 1080 (reference PCB) holds out until the 30xx series.
  2. My concern about jumping 10 numbers from 10xx to 20xx is... what happens after the 90xx series? Something tells me they're not going to go for 100xx.
  3. Try right click desktop > Display Settings > Scale and layout, adjust your scaling until everything looks normal. Edit: Looks like the issue got solved while I was typing.
  4. I distinctly remember reading some newspaper ads 10+ years ago, when a retailer did exactly this: advertising a 2GHz 4-core CPU as "8 GHz". Totally annoyed the shit out of me with their false advertising, as having 4 cores doesn't mean you get one task done 4 times faster, it just means you can (theoretically) do different 4 tasks in the same time you do 1.
  5. My last graphics card was an AMD R9 280X but I switched sides to Nvidia's GTX 1080. The reason was purely performance-related. At the time, AMD's top card was the RX 480, which greatly fell below my (and probably everyone's) expectations. I didn't have any faith that the 580 would come out anytime soon and even if it did, I doubted it would beat or even match the 1080. Best value for money? I'm not sure how to judge that, I suppose it varies from person to person. The way I see it, I can always earn more money, but I can't "earn" more performance without spending more money, so I went with the highest performance card that didn't wreck my bank - my 1080 is a reference PCB with custom cooler and no factory overclock. In the pre-Bitcoin days, AMD was widely regarded as the best price to performance option, at the cost of heat/noise. Today with mining, it's not clear who is best in that department, it all depends on what's the big "coin" being mined and which side it favors. For the other questions, I'm sure other people have answered them better than I can. In the past, AMD cards have continued to increase in performance over time with driver updates over time. For example, the R9 280X, which was the GTX 770's rival, had begun to approach, or exceeded the 780 in performance. The last point was purely from memory and I don't have hard evidence for it.
  6. I can't wait until Intel releases a mainstream 8-core soldered i7 CPU. I will definitely order my next build when that day arrives.
  7. I've read that stability isn't guaranteed if you pair up your RAM with RAM sticks from another kit. But in my opinion if you're buying the same brand sticks with the same specifications, it should be fairly safe, at least much better than buying from a different brand. For mixing different sized memory sticks, Intel CPUs have something called "flex memory mode" so part of the larger-sized RAM stick can run dual-channel with the smaller-sized stick. The remainder of the larger-sized stick runs in single channel. This is the "less efficient" part. So it works like this: 4GB + 8GB stick = (4GB + 4GB dual channel) + 4GB single channel You can read more about flex memory from Intel's documentation: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005657/boards-and-kits.html#flex
  8. Got a brand-new GTX 1080 within a week or so after it was just released, happily threw away my old and aging R9 280X and popped in the 1080, fired up Overwatch and threw all the graphics settings to Ultra. As I was enjoying a few games of max-settings + max FPS gameplay, I faintly hear though my headphones a sharp POP sound, but think nothing of it since it could just be a loose cable or something expanding from the heat inside my case. I hear about 2-3 more POPs and on the last one, all video cuts out. Fearing the worst, I opened up my case and immediately smelled something burning. After swapping back my old 280X, I confirmed that it was my 1080 that had suddenly died. I was super bummed out as I had barely had 2 hours of gaming with my brand-new 1080 before it died. Fortunately, EVGA was extremely cooperative with their support and I was able to arrange for a cross-shipped replacement at no cost.
  9. As the owner of a 4th-gen Intel CPU who was planning to make a new build in late 2019 or 2020, it looks like I may have to push forward my schedule with how fast Intel is advancing their CPU lineup thanks to the fire AMD has lit under Intel's butts. Going from a 4C/4T to 8C/16T CPU without having to pay for X-series prices? Sign me the hell up.
  10. Oh right, I forgot about Halo 2 completely. It felt such a dick move to end the PC Halo series on a cliffhanger then move onto console-exclusivity, as if saying "you must have an Xbox to find out what happens next, screw all of you PC gamers." It's probably how my internal hate for console-exclusives started.
  11. Nice, finally a sequel to Halo on the PC! (I don't acknowledge the existence of console-only games).
  12. As an ASUS RT-AC68U owner, good to know I'm still immune (for now).
  13. I'm using an i5 4690S with 16GB DDR3 RAM, GTX1080 and game at 1440p, and I've never had to downgrade quality settings for playable FPS. 16GB is still effectively "unlimited RAM" for gaming and general use - I don't think I've ever seen more than 9-10GB used even in extreme cases. So definitely get the 1080.
  14. The first time I experienced the speed of an SSD was from an in-store demo laptop that had one installed. Needless to say, my mind was absolutely blown while simply opening random programs and witnessing the near-total lack of load times.
  15. Nope, I honest-to-god do not have such a folder. It's my first non-iPod Apple product (iPad Air 2) so I know close to nothing about iOS and don't know if I'm simply overlooking something simple or I just don't have it installed for some reason.
  16. Wait a minute, iOS has a calculator? I had to download a third party one from the app store. I'm pretty sure I'm not blind and can't see the words "Calculator" on my screen, other than the one I installed myself.
  17. Who the hell even is Gamevice? If your company is so small and unknown that nobody knows who you are, all your "patent infringement" accusations need to be laughed out of court.
  18. I have a secondary IPS monitor (Asus one in my sig below) that I use for Youtube/Twitch/etc while I use a 1440p G-Sync TN monitor as my primary for gaming. I love having the IPS monitor available for watching videos and streams as I can watch with perfect clarity no matter my viewing angle (I often lie far back into my seat like a lazy slob and let it tilt back).
  19. Wonder how people can stand using Chrome with its built-in flashbang for every page load.

  20. Why do all online sellers seem to hate Canadians with unfair pricing?
  21. This is awesome news. I've always avoided locked phones and purchased them outright because I refuse to spend my money on something artificially locked down to a specific carrier. Though monthly plans are probably going to increase in price due to "increasing carrier costs" or some usual BS reason.
  22. You don't have to give me money to convince me to not date Taylor Swift, but I wouldn't say no to the 500K.
  23. Taking 30-40 minutes to install my 212 EVO cooler, failing horribly after watching every available tutorial on Youtube. I caused the thermal paste underneath the cooler to smush and smear all across the CPU heatsink as I fumbled around trying to center it, probably scratching the heatsink and contact surfaces along the way. Its a nice cheap cooler but damn is it hard to install for someone with no experience with aftermarket coolers.
  24. Personally, I find good questions for the interviewer are those that are disguised as opportunities for them to brag about their organization or feel proud about what they and their company do, while at the same time giving them the impression that you are genuinely interested in their organization and have done your research into them (which hopefully you are). Pay particular attention to the type of products/services/technology that the company sells, and phrase your question in a way that allows them to humblebrag about it.
  25. So basically, don't install any apps with "Judy" in the name and you're good.
