2013 Gaming Rig - i7 Haswell + GTX 780

loglog
Well, I guess I'll post up my Rig. FYI all the good stuff is at the bottom. Also, YES, i know an i7 is pretty much pointless over an i5 for gaming, but when you get it the price ($10 more than an i5) like i did it's really hard to pass up. Plus i'm banking on dev's designing for threaded cores.

Just a little background; I hadn't really built a new rig since 2008 so I figured it was a little over due to upgrade. The only thing I've done that I can remember since then was get a GTX 460 (from an 8800GT) and the Corsair 800D case (from some old hand-me-down). Here's what it looked like before

Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad

Asus 775 motherboard

4GB RAM (only had 2 of the 4 dims in place during photo)

Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200RPM

600W PSU

Asus DVD optical drive

Windows Vista

GTX 460

Corsair 800D

335085_279494855398760_8134673_o.jpg

Now we move to a couple days ago. TIME TO UPGRADE!

People were asking about prices so what I paid is listed below (as of July 2013), does not include shipping (in USD). Some where on sale, some I didn't care a bought it anyway. I had a $2000 USD budget in mind, SINCE I already had my 800D, so I did come in just over my budget by $94.00 but I can live with that.

Intel i7-4770k (OC'd to 4.5Ghz) - $249.99

Gigabyte z87x-ud3h - $159.99

EVGA GTX 780 OC'd ACX - $669.99

Corsair H100i (waiting on screws to do 4x Gentle Typhoon push/pull) - $109.99

Corsair 8GB RAM Vengeance Pro (1600mhz) - $77.99

Corsair 800D case - $269.99

Corsair AX850i - $209.99

Samsung 840 Pro 128GB (:slap: I should have gotten a 256GB ) - $149.99

Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 2TB - $99.99

Asus DVD read/ write - $19.99

Lian-Li  Triple 5.25" bay adapter for 120mm fan - $32.99

4x Gentle Typhoon AP-15 (I can't believe I found some!) - $24.97 = $99.88

3x Corsair AF-140 quiet - $18.99 = $56.97

Windows 7 Pro OEM - $139.99

Logisys dual 12" blue cathodes - 7.99

Logisys dual 6" blue cathodes - 7.99

Total = $2363.77 (Before shipping) for parts

I probably won't; however I'm kind of banking on game developers starting to utilize threads in the next couple years.

where did you buy a 4770k for 80-100 bucks less than typical?  250 is dirt cheap for that...  isn't that normal 4670k pricing?

It sounds quite loud!

It's honestly not. Actually its one of the quietest gaming PC's i've heard in person. It was noticeable in the video as I had the side panel off, which makes a difference, but i also had the camera that had a great mic quite close. I can barely hear it under my desk and any sound from my speakers from gaming or media completely drowns it out; even speaking to a friend downs it out.

If you sub'd that channel, i'm going to try and to another video of boot up and to show how loud it is in real life.

Very nice system and to me your old Mobo looks awfully familiar!

haha, did you have the same one?

lol u must be proud of the ssd :D awesome build btw

I am quite proud of it. It wasn't my original plan but it seems to have worked out quite nicely.

Microcenter.com has them for really cheap if you can pick them up from the store, which my friend who lives by one was nice enough to do for me. Keep in mind you also have to pay tax on that price, but it was still quite a bit cheaper than anywhere else i found. :D Honestly its the only reason i bought it over the i5 4670k

I completely agree, but again, i got it 1) I'm really banking on dev's utilizing threaded cores and 2) because it was nearly the same price as the i5 :)

That's one massive upgrade :D. Good job on the cable management and that SSD mount. I'd like to see some shots in normal lighting without those cold cathodes on.

Thanks, i'm going to try and borrow my buddies cammera again for some day time shots as well as a boot video that shows how quiet it actually is.

I don't think the sarcasm is needed here. And for all you know he may do a little bit of 3D rendering on the side. Plus if he has money to spend, why not use it?

I find this thread pretty comical...  I see build logs here where people are dumping $3k+ and spends tons of hours on their project and everyone says how awesome it is...

Than there's this thread... OMFG he spend $200 bucks more on slight overkill parts than he needed to for a gaming rig, how dare he...

Haha thanks for the back up; i really dont see the issue with over building when its not their money... They also didnt read that i bought it for almost $100 under retail.

The logic of some people is actually quite amusing xD

Although there are some which are just a downright pain...

I mean, the cpu is ridiculously cheap relative to retailers like Newegg who sell them for like 339.99 compared to microcenter having it for 279.99.  He also probably got his mobo at microcenter, so slap another $40 in savings assuming he bought it from there.  It's about $50 more for a gamble hoping that more games will utilize more cores.  It's not a bad thing that he has an i7 either...

Well mate the main thing is for you to enjoy the system. As long as it works for you then the system is pretty much golden. Although sometimes there are some things which we simply cannot ignore, like not using an 80+ PSU or pairing a Titan with an Athlon 64

=P
