Energy Drink Spilled! Help!

So energy drinks spelled, luckily didn't short anything out and the motherboard still post. However its left with the residue from the the sugar etc. Of the energy drink stuck on the motherboard in behind the CPU socket ( Have MSI 970 GAMING) and is within this PCI Express slot.

People here suggested to give it a 90% isopropyl alcohol bath. Well I got 99% and one litter of it.

Before I do this should I do it?

How the **** do you spill energy drink on your motherboard!?

Picard-Wtf.jpg

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

Pull the CMOS battery, give it a bath and it soak for anywhere from a couple hours to overnight, pull it out, remove any visible residue using a tissue and some alcohol.  Set it somewhere safe and let all the alcohol evaporate, stick CMOS battery back in and hope it works.

Although to be perfectly honest if I was paying you for a new PC, I'd expect my mobo never to have encountered energy drink.  If you can save it and use it yourself, that's cool, but my two cents is professional ethics dictate the customer get a new one or a price reduction.

Your best bet is to take some isopropyl alcohol and gently scrub off any contaminates on the board and give it a final bath/rinse to ensure everything is gone.

First off, sorry to hear about the mobo and best of luck to fixing it.  (if anything, you were probabily drinking the energy drink to stay awake while building the pc).

Second, that is very professional, responsible, and honorable to do.

I agree with this, with the one addition that when you rinse it off, don't use water or anything conductive if you can.  The main thing is you don't want to leave anything that will conduct, rust, or soak in and physically break down any parts (that includes oil dissolving certain rubber types, etc.)

Well it is alcohol, it should evaporate.

If it does not, use a coffee filter, it leaves alot less than most other things (does not really leave anything at all).  If they were to use something like a blow dryer, be very careful and set it on cold, if it still wont go away, then maybe warm.

yes, so maybe don't bother with the rinse at all then

I feel like leaving that sticky crap on there is probably worse than anything you'll do trying to get it off, so if you're careful and can wash it all off with alcohol, it will probably be for the better especially in the long run

In general you should be fine without taking them off if your just cleaning an isolated area but if your soaking the entire board in an inch or so of alcohol then it would be a good idea

well I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't, the warranty is already void.

see I'm still a little uneasy about the idea of "soaking" it... I was thinking more taking a moistened cloth and wiping it down

a BATH?!?! NO NO NO...WTF...DON'T DO THAT WOULD YOU SUBMERGE THE BOARD UNDER WATER?!?! no...WTF!

just take a little piece of cloth and put some alcool on it and then gently scrub it off..do not submerge the board under ANY liquid, you'll kill it! MANY parts of a motherboard arent meant to be under any type of liquid namely the capacitors and audio chips on the board will die...instantly.

Not in water but in an isopropyl alcohol bath (99%) to clean off the contaminates and corrosion if there is any, in general it won't mind as long as it's been given the proper amount of time to dry out.

Try it then, worst case senario, buy a new one.  Best case senario, learn something new and save some money.  (these senarios are in my opinion, they could be worst or better possibly).

Well, yes, worst case scenario throughout all of this is you kill the board, but I would have expected it to die as soon as it got hit so anything better than that is a bonus at this point imo
