1tb ssd for gaming

Tasuma

Hey all! I am getting ready to do my yearly pc upgrade. I am using a 120gb ssd boot and 1 500gb and 320gb mechnical drives for storage. I've noticed the price of SSD have gone way down. Would you lovely folks think it would be worth it to get a 1tb ssd or should I just get a 1tb wd blue?

I would go with an HDD for games. Load times aren't that bad normally

That is what I was thinking. For cheaper I could even get a 6tb WD black. I couldn't possible use all of that right now but the way games have been getting freaking huge wouldn't hurt. :P

Oh yeah games are way too massive. I would go with 1-2 TB HDDs but thats just me. I've heard theres problems with 3TB because of the bit count but thats mostly taken care of Jaystowcents has had problems with the 4TB but the 1-2TB have been great for him but thats just what I would do

Yes, mass HDD's are the way to go with games expanding.

OR, you could get an SSHD, which is faster than an HDD, but cheaper than an SSD.

But for games an SSHD is basically pointless

Just go for a 1TB HDD for mass storage and 500gb SSD for games or programs you wanna load faster.

~snip~

Hey there Tasuma,

Gaming generally relies on the storage's performance only for the loading times and autosaves. Graphics and FPS are not affected at all and depend on other parts such as CPU, GPU and RAM. Only a few games need to load huge texture files while in-game (usually open-world games or MMOs) but a good current drive should be able to handle that easily.
WD Blue should be good for gaming and should handle loading times pretty well so I'd say it's a good option. Another option is to get WD Black for better performance, shorter loading times and generally faster transfer speeds and multitasking. Either way you should be fine. :)

One of my son's computers has a 1TB, two 500s, and 250GB SSDs.  The other computer has two 500GBs.  My vote is for getting away from mechanical HDDs unless it's a giant one for a full system backup.  Solid state is much more reliable.  And quieter, holy crap the difference in noise is very noticeable.
