Apple dual sourcing A9 chip

AlTech

The guys over at chipworks have found out that the Apple A9 is being dual sourced by samsung and TSMC.

Apple has done this in the past but with fabrication processes which were similar.

This time it's quite different as 1 of the chips is larger than the other. The processes used are Samsung's 14nm FinFET and TSMC's 16nm FinFET.

Because of this we have 2 different sized A9 chips.

Samsung's is 96mm squared and TSMC's is 104.5mm squared.

This can pose a bit of a problem with consistency as 2 fabs can produce similar silicon on paper with different properties and attributes.

Not to mention the power efficiency differences and performance differences if any.

What do you guys think of this? Leave a comment below.

Until next time. Happy browsing :)
