if all you need this for is gaming go with an i5 instead of an i7, games wont benefit from more threads. get a cheaper psu, you dont need the watts. use the money you save on the cpu/psu and upgrade the gpu.

err, no, Ivy bridge can get solid overclocks unlike Haswell atm

Both use the same bad thermal paste. And although the overclock overhead is more on ivy-bridge, haswell gives about 7-10% performance boot. Narrowing the gap. Plus it may provide future compatiblity with broadwell.

Get a 3570k if you're really really want Ivybridge.

Use that extra money to get a 7950.

but you can make up for it in overclocks...

That's where the 7-10% performance increase kicks in. Plus why stick with a older generation? :)

Drop the 3770k to a 3570k, use the extra money to buy a better GPU.

Go for a 4670K and get a 770 or wait for 9XXX series. A 650W PSU would be more than enough.

HW or IB won't matter for gaming, not at all, 7-10% is a hugely inflated number. And no one upgrades their CPUs so who cares about broadwell compatibility. I would for for an HW i5 just because the z87 gen of mobos has been awesome, but performance won't matter.

To OP: swap the i7 for an i5, drop the PSU by 100-200W, up the GPU to whatever you can afford, and think about getting a bigger HDD

because haswell suck ass that's why

Who cares, the z87 boards from most OEMs are amazing, and that to me is enough reason to get it. Games aren't really CPU bound anymore.

true, I do agree that the boards on Z87 are better, but if you are true performance, Sandy Bridge or Ivy Brdige

IMO, i'd get a HW i5, drop the PSU a bit to maybe at most 700W; 850W is very overkill for your build. Get a cheap NVidia card, like a GTX 760. Ditch the WD for a Barracuda, maybe 1 TB. Seagate hard drives are cheaper and less problematic than Western Digital, IMO. If you don't mind waiting, I'd wait for Black Friday. Assuming you live in the US, Fry's Electronics has very good Black Friday deals.

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D
