Mobo can't run 16gb ram

I have built myself a new pc but the mobo doesn't want to run with 16gigs of ram ( 2x8), just one stick of 8. It restarts itself if more than 8gb.. All of the mobo drivers are updated.

Currently using:

Gigabyte Z97x gaming 3

Kingston Hyperx savage 1600mhz

Intel i5-4440

Edit:

I have tested all dimm slots and ram sticks, everything works fine individually . I tried to increase the voltage up to 1.65 and flashing the bios but that didn't work either

You may have to:

flash the bios to latest version

test each ram stick individually - in order to single out a ram problem

look at the pins on the cpu socket with a magnifying glass (memory controller is on the cpu)

Look at the pins on the DIMM slot

 

There's a good chance you'll have to get a replacement board, or it could be a bent pin

the specs on your board says 

 

Due to a Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than the size of the physical memory installed.

 

Troubleshooting a pc will make you believe in gremlins.

the specs on your board says 

 

The Operating System should still detect the full 16GB, but will say only 4GB useable -- IF he is using a 32-bit version OS. Given that OP has purchased a 16GB kit, I am assuming he is using a 64-bit version.

 

He is experiencing a boot-loop situation, where the system will continually reboot during P.O.S.T. and never reach Windows...if the full 16GB is installed -- but 8GB works.

Have you set the proper timings for your DRAM kit?

 

From what I know, higher density DRAM modules need to have slightly slower timings to right smoothly. For an example CAS 10 or 11 timings for 8GB density sticks, versus CAS 8 or 9 for 4GB sticks.

 

Use the voltage that is listed for that DRAM kit.

 

Otherwise, as @Hoppa state, check the CPU socket for any bent pins.

Well bad news ... really bent pin on the Socket.

Upon trying to gently straighten it with a really thin pin, the pin just fell off.

I cant imagine how on earth can this pin get bent... I just dropped the CPU on the mobo and locked the latch.

 

I will try to contact the warranty people on Monday but I have a BAAAAD feeling about this. Here is a pic:

 

Can the plastic protector on the mobo damage this wile removing it and refitting afterwords? I recall trying to put it and this may have done something...

The mobo got fixed! Not by the warranty though. A friend of my brother's is a fine electronics specialist and he took a pin from another mobo and soldered it to this mine. Don't ask me how but he did it. The fun part was, when i told him about the issue he said: That's it? I`ve had to deal with much worse, don't worry.

well wenn you buy a mobo with LGA socket. (intel)

Allways check the pins on eventualy damage before you drop in the cpu.

It happens very often that boards got shipped with bended pins or what not.

It sounds awfull, but it happens.

 

I´m personaly still not a big fan of LGA for that matter.
