Can you use a GPU with HDMI 2.0 on HDMI 1?

Hey guys! I bought a computer with a EVGA ACX 2.0 Superclocked NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB it has HDMI 2.0 and I have an HP monitor 1080 but not HDMI 2.0 can I still use it or is it different? 

RIG: CPU: i7-5930K 4.5GHz GPU: EVGA GTX 980 TI Superclocked 6GB RAM: 16GB DDR4 Motherboard: Msi X99S SLI Krait Edition Storage: 128GB SSD 2TB HDD

It will work but why use a 1080p monitor for a 980ti?

Because I still didnt order the 4k monitor so for now Im going to be using a 1080p one but its huge like 32in or something
