Switching audio device requires program restart

iamdarkyoshi

Every time I plug in my derp headphones, I have to restart anything playing audio for it to go to the headphones (or vice versa) Why is this a thing? It is very obnoxious. Asrock Sound Blaster, windows 10.

Depends on program or game. When I want to switch from headphones to speakers or the other way around it works on the fly in bf3 but not in GTA V it is dependent on the game and not any "issue". I guess it might have to do with how the audio of the engine works or something. Not sure though.

It happens on my brothers PC which has a cheapie 40$ motherboard with realtek audio, and mine, which uses the game blaster. I could see why it would happen though. If a game uses 7.1 audio and you switch to headphones, all of the sudden your sound config changes. But with such a "high end" soundcard, you would think that it could re process the 7.1 audio as stereo for the headphones. Put that quad core audio processor to work! I think I will probably just buy an 3.5mm splitter and just plug the speakers and headphones into it, turning off the speakers when I want to use headphones. Obviously this won't work with anything other then stereo speakers though.

Or any surround sound setup that utilizes a receiver...
