Time for new cpu ?

So my dad has this older 2008 ish general pc, its a hp pavilion something something blah blah, it has 4gb ddr2 ram, a intel pentium dual core, a wd or seagate 500gb hdd (cant remember if wd or seagate), and its running windows 7 ( soon to be switched to 10 ). Also forgot to mention that this thing has a beastly gpu, it has a nvdia geforce 9300ge that absolutely chews through minesweeper at 480p. Back on topic, the pc is slow, and ive basically narrowed it down to the cpu holding back the system, my question is would stepping from a lower end dual core pentium to a core 2 quad q6600 help out ? I can get one used on ebay for about 30$

too expensive for this kind of oc, plus the cpu being pinned at 100% trying to load up google a ssd wouldnt help much

Guys ssd is not an option, its way to expensive for what the pc is and would really solve the problem

IT's not necessarily the file transfer speeds that it needs, but rather the reduced seek times.

SSD is pointless in this situation where a standard ssd would be bottlenecked by Sata 2 ports and i see getting a p45 and a q9950 instead of a ssd.

To be honest, it might not be worth saving, unless you want to become a master at solitaire.

its my dads ocasional pc and he really has a 0$ budget so im just trying to get his pc running a little faster for as cheap as possible

what is the board......some boards can't handle a c2q even tho it says "supported".

to be completely honest all i know is its an asus something, i would need the model of pavillion to check on their website and the soonest i can get that is friday, ill do some searching and try and see if i can find it

It supports up to Q9xxx so 9550 would be fine.

Yeah, but you also have to factor the cooling too.

Before you buy anything, when was the last time it had a fresh install of the OS done to it?

If it has been a few years that would likely help a ton, especially if your dad isn't the most computer savvy person.

it has been a few years but I've been keeping it clean, disabling pop ups, virus scans, disk defrag, the usual stuff, I'm most likely going to upgrade him to windows 10 this weekend so I'll see if that does anything
