Pentium G3258 Won't Overclock with MSI H81M-P33 Motherboard!

Go to solution Solved by acenautik,

Hey sorry for the super late reply, but I did eventually figure it out. What I did was I did a clean reinstall of Windows 7 (the OS I'm running on) and I didn't bother with installing any extra MSI programs or anything like that and went straight to overclocking my CPU from BIOS and it worked! Hope this was helpful, this solution worked for me - hope it works for anyone else who has this problem!

PLEASE HELP. VERY FRUSTRATING PROBLEM.

Last week I built my Pentium G3258 + MSI H81-P33 rig and I have a problem where if I set the CPU multiplier above 32 (3200mHz) to 33 (3300mHz) for example, my computer will not be able to boot into windows.

When overclocking: The computer will boot past the BIOS screen and show the windows boot sequence for 2 seconds and then stops. The system then restarts itself and loads to Windows Error Recovery screen.

I have tried to do Startup Repair but that doesn't do anything for me. And once I go back into BIOS and set everything back to default settings windows boots up no problem.

This problem doesn't occur when I underclock the CPU to 3100mHz.

My BIOS is up to date with BIOS version 1.90.

PS. There are multiple threads online where this CPU and motherboard combination is compatible for overclocking.

Did you turn Vcore voltage off auto and to something like 1.20v? It sounds like it's just not stable (i.e. the multiplier is too high or the voltage is too low).

Are you on stock cooling? and have you adjusted the voltage?

Yes, I am on stock cooling. I've tried adjusting Vcore voltage to 1.20V but the result is the same.

Make sure the voltage is NOT set to Adaptive/auto, and bump it to 1.30v and try again, you may just have gotten a complete trash G3258.

If the above still doesn't work I would also suggest going back to stock clocks and running Aida64/Prime95.

Just tried bumping the Vcore voltage to 1.30V on override and it still doesn't work :/

Should I run Prime95 for a while before trying again?

Not a huge expert on Intel side, but does H81 chipset even supports overclocking ?

It sounds like you might just have a bottom-of-the-barrel chip.

But you could run Prime 95 and see how low you can get the voltage and still have it be stable.

yes

Yes, it does. Originally only Z-chipsets were supposed to support overclocking, but an update allowed all LGA1150 boards to overclock an overclockable cpu -- now it's just a question of how well the board will handle it.

I think your motherboard doesn't support overclocking.

It does.
