i7-920

A friend of mine was just given a system with an i7-920. He wants to do some gaming on this system, but is unsure if the CPU is good enough. Is it? Or should he get something better?

At stock it will bottleneck higher end GPUs.  It has a lot of overclocking headroom though, and an overclock to 3.8-4GHz would reduce bottlenecks substantially.  Personally I wouldn't use more than a R9 280X or a GTX 960 with it.

Get a decent cooler and overclock it to 4 GHz, or 3.8 to be safe. Mine still works like a charm.
