Need help with setting up home server!

Help!

First off thanks for taking the time to check out my post, now for the important stuff.

I love computers & building them, but I'm a networking NOOB! (otherwise I wouldn't be here right?). I have the most powerful desktop in my home and I've also got all the networking stuff in my room. However, my Mom wants a new office computer, my Dad wants a small form factor Gaming PC to replace his Xbox 360, my little brother wants something to edit video's he records on his Xbox One with, and my little Sister wants something to play Minecraft and other simple games with. (I've already got all their builds planned out) Now that would make 5 PC's in my house along with a few laptops, a sh*t ton of mobile devices (phones & tablets), and two smart TV's.

I'd like to know what would be the best configuration for setting up a home server with several terabytes of redundant storage for documents, movies, and family photos and videos to be shared across our incredibly fast network (100Mb/s up, 100Mb/s down). I'd prefer to build something small and manageable but also something that I can also tinker with for fun. So the question I'm asking is for around 500 USD what would be the best network configuration to setup multiple computers to be able to access all the data available (unless private of course) on the network. Also what OS would be best to run to do said networking?

Thanks! I appreciate any feedback you can give :)

Well if you want a simple network storage solution I would recommend getting a 4+ bay nas as you can do raid and have it on all the time and use little power.

Drobo, synology, netgear, dlink, etc all make them and just put the drives that you want in and hook it up to your network.

Human intelligence decreases with increasing proximity to oncoming traffic.

I suggest you go with a complete solution like this: http://www.amazon.com/Cloud-EX4-Diskless-High-performance-reliability/dp/B00G4JZ2T0/

If you want something more budget friendly then: http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-ReadyNAS-Diskless-Attached-RN10400-100NAS/dp/B00BNI4CVG/

There are of course even better NAS servers, however next step is already 400-500 diskless.

If you are looking to build a server, then ITX, Pentium, 4GB RAM in a small case. Plus get a few WD Reds or Greens. Same goes for the pre-made solutions.
