HD 4/5000 graphics?

DotoreN

Almost every Lenovo thinkpad & ultrabooks in general have HD 4 or 5000 graphics, are they any good at all or should I be looking for a dedicated GPU?

I'm not familiar with how GPU graphics work in a laptop, so i'd like some information/advice :)

What is your budget and what are you going to be playing?

i'm starting a study in "software engineering" / programming of 4years. I'm looking for a 8gb ram, 256ssd, i5 or i7 laptop. I'll not be using it for gaming, just for school/programming (java, sql, php, python, ruby etc).

I'll be transporting it everyday so either 13 or 15inch.

13 because of portability, but 15 because I like to work on 15.
