First Water Cooled Build - Help please?

Ceraon

Hey all,

Im in the middle of planning my next build, and for what i am planning it will need to be water cooled, Not only for perfromance but to cut down on noise levels as well.

So i am here to ask the question, Custom loop or Closed Loop? Set up isn't an issue as i have enough experiance with building other Pc's and i look forward to the challange the custom loop presents. However, i am still tossing up wheather or not i can justify the extra cost for the performance i will recieve.

With the build costing me around $6,800 including a Corsair Hydro H110i GT + Shipping and a budget of about $7000 NZD give or take i am left feeling a tad lost for options.

So i am here asking for your guys knowledge! Anything you can pass on to me eg. Which parts i should look at for a starting point (as i will expand in the future), Prices, Performance, Why to choose either set up etc. will be much appreciated and used to make my decision in the future.

Plan Build so far:

Case: Cooler Master Cosmos II (Black) - $549.95

Optical Drive: LG BH16NS40 - $131.95

Graphics Cards: EVGA GeForce GTX980 FTW ACX 2.0 - 2x $986.11

SSD: Samsung 850 EVO Series 500GB - $382.95

HDD: WD Red 64MB 2TB - $148.17

Motherboard: Asus X99-Deluxe - $669.00

CPU: Intel Core i7 Extreme 5960X 3.0 GHz Socket 2011-3 - $1516.85

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA P2 1200W - $466.85

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 PC19200/2400MHZ 4x8GB - $638.83

Cooling: Corsair Hydro H110i GT - $289.99

8
Total Cost: $6,766.76

Watercooling won't be quieter than aircooled systems, you still need fans to cool the radiators.

If you're concerned about return on investment, then I don't recommend going for a custom loop. Just go with a AIO for cpu and leave the gpu's on air. Custom loops don't yield that much more performance but the cost associated is very high. A basic loop with a cpu block, 2 gpu blocks, 2 radiators, res, and pump can easily cost $900 for decent parts. Good fittings can also be expensive.

Under load i have heard it would be? However i could be wrong. I know from previous builds that aircooling can be abit over the top (noise wise) at times.

Im not worried about the return side of things as such, i plan on keeping and expanding on this build in the future as cash frees up. Would i be better to go for a simple custom loop and expand on it as i expand my system or will a closed loop be sufficient enough to cool my system?

All depends on the type of cooler you get, stock cpu coolers will be noisy. The noise could also come from your gpu, intake or exhaust fans.

It depends how much surface area you have on your radiators and how big the fans are. More surface area with bigger fans turning slower will result in a quieter system under load. If you don't have enough radiator space then fans will ramp up making a louder system, and pump noise is louder at idle than quiet fans on a air cooler.

Thanks for your help guys, i think i will be sticking with water cooling over air however. Any recommendations on closed loop coolers to look into?

An AIO like the h110i gt or x61 would definitely be good enough to cool a 5960x, and gtx 980's don't get that hot either. Just make sure there's plenty of airflow in the case and you should be fine. I recommend just saving the money and just add new gpu's in the future when more performance is needed. Having a closed loop will make swapping parts easier.

And the more rads you have, the slower you can run the fans......
