Sony invest in self driving cars

With Google making self driving cars and Apple wants a piece of the pie. Sony had recently jumped on the self driving car bandwagon by investing about 100 million yen in ZMP, a Japanese start up company that makes robotic cars. While Google and Apple are focusing on the car, Sony on the other hand is taking a different path into this self driving car industry. Their main focus of this investment isn't about the car itself, but more on the cameras and sensor technology that needs to go along with it. Sony already having the expertise with cameras and sensors, since it's already built into their smart phones, hopes by investing with ZMP, they will become the number 1 in automotive camera and sensor technology. As according to analyst a self driving car might need as many as 10 cameras, with the cameras costing 4-5 times as much as smartphone cameras, and the demands increase significantly when the self driving car age arrives by 2020.
