Fallout 3 Fix?

seabass9990
Go to solution Solved by EChondo,

Fallout 3 is very 50/50 with how it's going to work on PC. I've had some bizarre scenarios in the past where Fallout 3 will not work on my system, but after reinstalling my OS(Windows 7), it works without any problems.

OP, I know you've stated that you've tried some fixes already so sorry if I do some repeating, but try these fixes if you haven't already.

1. Download and install FOSE: http://fose.silverlock.org/

2. Patch the executable to allow 4GB: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

3. Disable GFWL: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/1086/?

4. Try Archive Invalidated: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/944/?

5. Large Address Aware(similar to 4GB patch): http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/6510/?

6. Crash fix: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/13245/?

7. 2014 Updated Unofficial Patch: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/19122/?

8. Windows 7 Crash fix guide: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/18900/?

9. Windows 7/8 Crash fix: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/20371/?

For #4, a comment on the mod says;

OK finally solved. So for everyone with steam version of GOTY and w7.

Best way is to "install" it manually and then delete menus folder in data and it should work with no problem.

In the past 1, 2, and 4 with some ini tweaks and DLL's downloaded fixed Fallout 3 for me. I'd try each of these individually to see what works for you, but you might have to do multiple fixes for it to work.

Nowadays since I have both Fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition on Steam, I install Tale of Two Wastelands which simply makes Fallout 3 run in the New Vegas engine and also allows you to travel between the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave Desert. Also since Fallout 3 is being run in the New Vegas engine means that I can use New Vegas mods. So whenever I have issues with crashing I also install;

1. 4GB Loader: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/35262/?

2. Stutter remover: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/34832/?

3. NVAC: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635/?

Fallout 3 is very finicky, but it's so worth putting up with it as it's a great game. Best of luck!

can anyone tell me how to get fallout 3 goty (from steam) to work on my rig? I have googled and tried everything i could find, maybe some fixes break others? I had it running on my old core 2 duo platform but with my upgrade to a six core it broke, even after re dowloading it and wiping mods.

Thanks, but sadly I'm not even 100% that this will fix your issues. Fallout 3 is just very poorly optimized when it comes to different systems specs. I doubt the OS has anything to do with the crashes, I bet it's probably an issue with how the CPU and RAM works with it if anything.

If one of those works for you then great! But if not it could be a long process of trying to find what works for you. I know it took me a week of testing to make sure the game didn't crash on me, trying different mods, programs, and tweaks here and there.

You can also try using FOMM to see if it's an issue with how the game is loading up on your system. For example, the game might be messing up and loading DLC's or other things first before the actual game does, this will correct that, but personally I haven't heard of that happening, but I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility.

Keep us updated, I'll see if I can find some guides or other fixes. It's been awhile since I've played vanilla Fallout 3, so I'm not that up to date.
