Advice and improvements for my first build

PSG95
Go to solution Solved by xnoobftw,

It is more powerful - 6 core/12 thread cpu, quad channel DDR4 memory. When it comes to highly multi-threaded, cpu intensive operations like many modeling tasks it will perform much better. Both builds use the same gpu so gaming would be roughly the same as would editing functions that use the gpu.

I honestly do not think the x99 plateform is worth going into.. z97 is way more cost efficient

How would this one compare to the one given by xnoobftw?

Here is a better built that you wanted

Hello members of the linustechtips forums, I have found myself in a situation in which I need to build my own PC. I will be using it primarily for 3D modeling/rendering and gaming. The 3D programs i will use will be Maya, 3DsMax, Zbrush, etc and the games I will play will be Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed Unity, etc I don't have any experience with building a PC but after a lot of research this is what my potential rig will be composed of:

Intel Core i7-3770 LGA 1155 Ivy Bridge Quad Core processor - $300

Noctua NH-D14 CPU cooler - $71

Asus P8Z77-V LX LGA 1155 motherboard - $224

Corsair Vengeance 16GB Dual Channel (2 x 8GB) DDR3 RAM - $147

Asus GeForce GTX 760-DC2OC-2GD5 graphics card - $200

Kingston Digital 120GB SSD for operating system and chosen applications- $58

Western Digital 1TB Black hard drive for general storage - $70

Asus DRW-24F1ST SATA Black DVD/CD writer - $20

TP-Link TL-WDN4800 wireless network adapter - $40

Seasonic 550w 80+ Gold Semi-Modular power supply - $75

Corsair Carbide Series Black 300R windowed computer case - $90

Peripherals:

Asus VX228H 21.5 inch LED monitor - $140

Get a Intel Core i7-4790, it costs less than 300$.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i74790

And get a actual motherboard like Z97, but you'll not overclock that CPU so maybe a H97 is better.

SLI another 970 if you want more graphics power.

Peripherals is all up to you, get an IPS panel since you are doing 3d modeling

Can you recommend any IPS panels and also I'd like to avoid water cooling for now so can you recommend something else for CPU cooling?

I would suggest a more powerful cpu and gpu. The motherboard has dual channel a/b/g/n/ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Thank you all for your advice and opinions, I think I will go with the build given by xnoobftw because it seems to be the the most cost efficient rig.
