MSI vs Asus

Go to solution Solved by Octavialicious,

Asus, astounding build quality and they tend to be good overclocking boards.

Hi everyone, I am new to the forums. I will be building my new PC next week and can't decide on my motherboard. Should I get an Asus z97a or an MSI z97 gaming 5? I will be overclocking an i5 4690k. Which motherboard is overall a better choice?

Both very good boards. Comes down to personal preference.

I'd go with the one that fits the color scheme in your build, if you don't care about that I'd take the Z97-A though ^^

I would say MSI if you want it to match your color scheme (If you plan on red and black). Other than that, get ASUS

Eh, bad experienced with MSI.. My board was a DOA and they won't refund or replace it and it now sits in my closet just because it has a dead SATA controller.. I then bought a Asus board, and it has been rock solid ever since..

Thanks MSI for making me waste $100 after my parents took $200 out of my savings for my computer.. GG... Honestly, everyone has a different experience, but MSI treated me like absolute shit, they might now with someone else like you, but they might. Overall, they make great products that seem reliable and working for most.

I like to always go for a Asus board over any other brands just because of the excellent build quality

Asus Z97-AR.

Asus motherboards are the best. Their included software and fan control sets them apart from the competition.

Overclock? Doesn't  matter.

Build Quality? Doesn't matter. This is not a chip that needs awesome power phases to OC. Board matters on AMD, not much on Intel.

What matters? Which one you like the looks of. The PCI lanes if you are running more than one card. Both can run sli. MSI has better lanes but it probably won't matter. I would get the MSI personally. Why? Better onboard sound. Not that it means all that much, but if they are the same price? It is a slightly better board.

Will GPU's ever need 16x lanes? Maybe. I don't know. I know the memory bandwidth on the next AMD series is supposed to be silly high.

I would feel safer buying the MSI between those two models.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, it sounds as though the Asus has better build quality than the MSI; but the MSI has slightly better onboard sound. I think I will go for the Asus z97a, but if I can find the MSI gaming 5 cheaper on black Friday then I will go for that. :)
