As far as gain goes, it seems like it's just automagically controlled. The specs sheet does say external audio recording via microphone is possible. While the gain may be out of your control, the audio itself coming in from the shotgun mic will be better quality than otherwise. The only other solution would be an external recorder.

Yes, but in these cheap mics I'm sure I can't control anything.. If I buy a lapel mic I can connect it to my phone (if it sounds bad on the camera) and maybe fix the problem.. I don't know
