If it's just for gaming...4690K.

You know that you could get a 5820K at that price...but if your purely gaming, then a i5 4690K will be fine.

Are you sure games later on wont use hyperthreading?

Only a few games support it atm, by the time the devs actually utilize HT in games, this current gen cpu's will probably be outdated anyway......

Many games can use HT but it makes little to no difference for the most part.

Star Citizen the most demanding game i know uses 60% usage on my friends 3570k so 55% usage on the 4690k put a decent cooler on it and overclock to 4.5Ghz and you will be sitting at 40-45% usage so you will be set for 5 years with the cpu. There is barely a difference with an i7 even on the most demanding games.

The possibility that PC-Games are gonna use Hyperthreading is getting higher imo. For example not less really good games are already using it. But as said your money your choice. I would recommend you the

i7-4790k it could be usefull for expansions and if you go into videoediting OR Want To Play Star Citizen.

Star Citizen isn't that well optimized for multiple cores and HT yet.

Well, Haswell refresh, Devils Canyon, and some Steamroller APU's and Athlon was this year.

games have been utilizing hyperthreading for ages now but what you really mean is if it will utilize the amount of threads hyperthreading provides cuz an i3 gets its value out of hyperthreading (games can utilize 4 threads) while the i7 wouldnt (hardly any game uses 8 threads)

System: Intel Core i3 3240 @ 3.4GHz, EVGA GTX 960 SSC 2GB ACX 2.0, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Kingston HyperX RAM, ASRock B75M-DGS R2.0 Motherboard, Corsair CX430 W Power Supply

if its for pure gaming then a 4690K is more then enough cpu.

if you also do some streaming, or you edited a video at times.

Then grab a 4790K.

my opinnion :)

IMO, parallel processing in gaming is on its way out with Mantle and DX12.

Under 400 dollars would be 4790K. A 5820K isnt worth it due to 28 PCI-E lanes, poor memory controller, and the need for an expensive mobo and DDR4.

A 4930K(can find in the low $400s) would be a decent option because they use DDR3 and you can find them for a bargain if you really want 6C/12T.

All games currently even 10 years old ones use HT. It doesn't require any special support, just the same support as for physical cores aka a thread to feed it. Thing is only a very very few games show some performance improvements with HT. Anyways I'd recommend a 4690K for gaming and use that 100$ towards something else like a new PSU/Case.

I hold fast to my "Any quad core not on AM1 from this year" ruling.
