"Server" ram?

Is there such a thing as server only ram? I know there's ECC ram, but i thought the ECC module just didn't do anything if the motherboard it was in didn't support ECC.

Would i have problems if i put this "Server only" ram into a "desktop" board?

Specifical, an x5650/x5660 (depending on if i cheap out or not) into an Asrock X58 extreme. It says it supports ECC ram with Xeons, so that's not a concern, but what about if i use a first gen I7? Would that cause an issue?

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't, but i'm not laying down money without checking first :P

Edit: And for the record, i know for a fact ECC memory doesn't matter on Z97, all i want to know is if it affects X58 when using CPUs that don't support ECC

Editedit: Because you people are useless; all i want to know is will the ECC module just turn off in X58 like it does X79 or am i going to have to get non-ecc ram?

ECC memory is not supported by consumer motherboards OR CPUs. It will just not work. At all.

Servers can use non-ecc or ecc ram, regular desktops cannot use ecc ram.

I might not be remembering it correctly, but ECC helps prevent errors in the ram to protect data from potential loss.

I'm pretty sure ECC just means error correction chip, or something, but yea thats what it does.

Did you even read the post? jesus

No first generation i7, supports ECC memory, so you won't be able to use it in that motherboard with an i7. Also which model is the i7?

It's a board made for I7s. Jesus, people.

Yes, but would the ECC memory work as Non-ECC memory with an I7 CPU?

That's how it works in Z97, is that also how it works in X58?

I wish I could give you a specific yes or no, but it's likely to be completely board dependent and only someone who has used that exact board with both ECC and non-ECC will be able to tell you.

Best advice, send ASRock an email or call their support line.

From Wikipedia...

The Core i7 Bloomfield does not support error-correcting memory.[1][2][3] Some motherboards with an LGA 1366 socket support both Core i7 and the Xeon 35xx and 55xx series processors, and advertise support for ECC memory.[21][22] However ECC functionality is only available if a Xeon is installed, not if a Core i7 is installed.
