Wireless Bridge is not consistent with network speeds...

Uphorics
Go to solution Solved by Uphorics,

Awesome. Looks like my router doesn't like bridges...

Hooked up an old router my dad used a few years ago to the modem, then connected the bridge to the router. The speeds shot right back up to ~15mbps. The range isn't too good on the thing so I wasn't expecting anything high. Glad I solved it, and thanks guys for some of the help along the way.

In a nutshell: Don't buy an Asus RT-N53 to use with wireless bridges, no matter how cool the router looks on the box:

Hey guys, I need some serious help...

I recently bought a new range extender that runs in Bridge mode which is connected to a switch that gives internet to all of my devices in my room. But I've run into a few problems about how well it's able to hold a connection 2 floors down to my router...

I usually get ~17 - 20mbps, which is reasonable to me for the plan I have. But sometimes the connection plummets to something around 1mbps... Sometimes even lower.

I don't think this is a router issue since my phone seems to be pretty consistent with internet speeds, but I could be wrong.

Here are the speedtest results:

Good test:

BAD test:

It would be super helpful if somebody could help me out with this struggle.

Thanks in advance!

As is generally the case with wireless, it will vary in performance. Do you still get this problem when closer to the originating router?

Also, what models of router and bridge do you have?

I haven't tested it closer to my router but I'll try to soon. But here's the thing: my old bridge that broke a few weeks ago didn't have this issue, that's why I'm a bit confused...

My Bridge is an EnGenius ERB9250, and I forgot to mention that my router is new (bought it at the same time as the bridge). My router is an Asus RT-N53 Dual Band N600 Router.

I'd check to make sure all forms of QoS are turned off, it may be throttling your wireless traffic for some reason. Also, you said "devices" are connected to the bridge. Any chance one device is running updates or streaming something?

The devices I currently have hooked up are my computer, my xbox (which is off) and my Raspberry Pi which is currently being used as a bitcoin miner host. I've tested the speeds of my Pi and I can guarantee that's not the issue (I've also tried my speeds with it off). And QoS on my router is all off. Sorry if I'm making things a bit complicated, lol. If I end up returning the bridge, I might go with Powerline ethernet.

When setting up wireless bridges, you should always try them out right next to each other first. Also, is your network password protected? Someone may be leeching your internet

All protected and secured. I can see how many clients are connected to it (currently 3 devices: my bridge, phone, and laptop). Thanks for the help guys. I'll test my bridge speed next to my router tomorrow, It's completely possible it's just a faulty unit.

I'll post right here on this thread tomorrow :) I'll give you updates, and I'll see if I can borrow my friend's bridge for a short time to determine if it really is just a bad unit. Thanks for the help!

Try using a file copy to a server or an other computer as your speed test as it is not effected by your isp. Also if there is more interference from others it may kill speed. WIFI sucks get used to it.

Welp, here's what I've done.

I've reset my router and bridge to factory settings. Nope.

I've tried connecting my computer directly into the bridge (skipping the switch altogether). Nope.

I've tried using my friends bridge. AND GUESS WHAT? The speeds are identical.

This means there's something wrong with my router. Anybody have any guesses? I still have the receipt for the router, It's tempting to return it...
