Duct tape on Heatsink?

SnowGhost1212

Hey,

Is it a really stupid idea or could I put duct tape on a heat sink to make it all black? If I can't what would yo suggest to get the same effect.

Thanks,

SnowGhost

Putting duct tape on a heatsink may prevent it from dissipating heat as effectively.

It's better to use a spray paint than to wrap it in a vinyl or plastic type insulating material, the paint will lessen heat dissipation but to a less severe degree. What heatshink are you trying to paint?

Well I was thinking of buying a MSI Z97M Gaming Motherboard however I want a black motherboard so I was wondering if I could blackout the heatsinks. http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=27815&cPath=1491

Yes you can blackout the heatsinks but I wouldn't use tape or vinyl, but also remember if you paint the heatsinks it will almost for sure void the warranty on the motherboard, so you have to take that into consideration before doing something absolutely permanent.

Plastidip spray paint is a popular choice because you can peel it off fairly easily if need be. I think the red accents unscrew too so it should be easy to paint.

Problem is it's an insulator since it's spray on rubber, that need multiple coats to get good coverage.

If he's just painting the red accents it shouldn't be a problem as they are mainly for aesthetics rather then cooling.

True it won't dampen it too much... but in anycase its best not to affect it in anyway
