Suitable antivirus?

Tazman192

Hi.

I was recently experiencing black screens and hanging with my pc on startup, and never really got round to figuring out what it was until now - apparantely Avast Antivirus.

I've not had any issues with it on other pc's so I didn't think it was my AV causing the issue., and even a clean install of the antivirus didn't fix my problem of hanging - disabling it knocked restart times from around 70 seconds to 40 (using a HDD).

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and would you guys recommend any other decent antivirus that won't cause issues such as this? I was using the free edition.

I'm not stupid with what I download or anything, so an antivirus isn't exactly essential but it's always nice to have one.

Cheers

best recommendation, malewarebytes(pro is amazing)+malwarebytes anti exploit and security essentials is pretty much the best combo.

Neither have I. I spent 2 hours just now disablign every startup service and program one by one, and Avast was definitely the culprit. Everything is enabled again besides Avast, and the hanging hasn't occured for atleast 4 restarts (it used to happen every restart).

I have malwarebytes - I don't have it as a startup program, more just run a scan every 2 weeks or so to make sure everything is fine, it's never in the background.

thats the problem sadly you need the pro version for it to always be on however their new software anti exploit is free and is always on, it stops un wanted downloads from occuring, for example some sites will try to download a well coded malware onto your pc, bad malware is only noticeable to the standard person because its coded poorly a lot of the time the coder doesnt want you to know because if you know there is malware then of course you will remove it or attempt to at least. Anyways get anti exploit.

Hey, I work for AVG.  Just found this :)

I recommend AVG free edition if you want the best free antivirus.  Its got application control, an inbuilt emulator and a behavior blocker.

If your willing to pay I use Kaspersky, some people in my group use Avast.  But Avast IS stinks compared to Kaspersky.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, or if it's Windows 8, Windows Defender is built in.

Microsoft essentials is fine. You could also go with Avira antivirus.
