I would like to dual boot windows and os x, and I was wondering if my r9 290 is supported by os x?  I am pretty sure the rest of my system is fine, but here it is anyways:

  • CPU - Intel Xeon E3 1231v3

  • Motherboard - Gigabyte Z97MX GAMING 5

  • RAM - 8gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz

  • GPU - XFX R9 290

  • Case - Corsair Obsidian 350d

  • Storage - Crucial MX100 256gb SSD, WD Blue 1tb HDD

  • PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 850w

AMD and OSX dont like to play along

it can be done, but you could have to go through some (lenghty) troubleshooting

AMD GPUs are supported natively on 10.9 and up.

Everywhere I have read has said that they needed to troubleshoot to get the 290 series to work.

Well my GPU is working fine and it is the same as a R9 290.

Edit: Apple added support anyway with 10.9

thats unexpected, seeing as they dont sell mac's with AMD (consumer) cards and they strictly state that you cant use OSX without a PC that isnt made by them (says in the user agreement rules last time i looked into OSX)

so you'll have to build ,or upgrade an excisting mac but most apple buyers dont even know what PCIe is...

I have read that 280's are supported, but I haven't seen anywhere that 290's work. When you say "AMD gpus are supported natively", does that include 290s?

Your signature says you have a 7950.  That is the same as a 280, not a 290.

it seems like the 290 isn't though... It says the 290 will "need a few dev-id injections" to work.

http://netkas.org/?p=1331

Can anybody tell me what that means?

There are a few customs things needed to be done to get it working 100%, currently WIP.

you derp.

For early adopters, we've listed the following Gigabyte and ASUS 9 Series motherboards. These Socket 1150 motherboards are similar to 8 Series and fit the same 4th generation Core i CPUs. However, OS support is limited and workarounds for onboard audioand Intel HD 4600 graphics are necessary. For now we are recommending 8 Series motherboards for new users.

ATM there is no publicly available build that works without issues. Once 10.10 is out, which is around the corner, there should be better support.
