Intels New CPUs'

I guess this must of been answered multiple times but I don't quite understand the new processors that are being released (to many new names). I'm am currently looking at getting the Intel 4930K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor as my software I use can leverage the extra cores, is there anything on the new line up that matches this before committing to a new system build?? I know the extreme edition processor is slightly better but it is very expensive and I don't think worth it.

Cheers

when the haswell-E is released it will probably be a better chip than the 4930k for overclocking, especially with it being confirmed to be soldered to the IHS instead of using TIM. that being said it will probably be a 10% improvement in performance at most.

X99 is on its way

5930K is also a 6 core CPU which uses quad channel DDR4

If this is being used for a professional setting I'd say go with the 4930k as you can't really afford an extend amount of down time; this is especially true considering the marginal performance difference you'd probably get with Haswell-E. That's of course noting if you aren't going to be pushing this CPU balls to the wall all the time and need every bit of performance. The thermals and overclocking would also be likely improve by the better assembly and changes in lithography. If it's not a professional setting it might be wise to wait a bit since Haswell-E is getting close and with such an expensive investment I'd want to get the most for my money.

The upgrade from a 4930k to a 5930k is going to be like the improvement of any other processor whether it's an i5 or quad core i7. The only tangible place where performance will actually improve is the 5960X where it will have 8 cores.

Just a little insight, all LGA2011 cpus on the market are soldered to the IHS.TIM is only used on Intel mainstream platforms. They do not to use TIM on their enthusiasts platforms. Never have.

Right now the ddr4 price is about 16/gb, I guess it will drop relatively fast.

I'll give you a little hint as to how much DDR4 will be, as there is already some avaliable to buy at newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007611%20600521523&IsNodeId=1&name=288-Pin%20DDR4%20SDRAM

The first criucal memory on the list sold out an hour ago.

I am using for my work PC upgrading from some old 4 core that runs balls to the wall. What where you referring to when you said down time, is this the time before it is released?? I have time to wait as my workload will not need my PC at its max, so if there would be tangible benefit on waiting i will. I would of thought though that the two extra cores would give a good benefit??

By down time I thought you where either at capacity or had a situation where you won't have a PC available for professional work. If there's already an existing PC it's a matter of preference we've pretty much listed the said benefits. Now it's up to you to discern if you think it's worth it.

I think you right from you first post, judging that the build will be quite expensive I think it will be worth waiting that little bit extra!!

Cheers for the info!!

Any time mate. I was only concerned about actual down time where you won't get any if not much work done. You know the cliche time is money.
