First time building a P.C.

I am building a new desktop because my 3 year old moderate laptop isn't exactly ideal for being able to play games on, it has a dual core 2.6 ghz CPU and a radeon 4250 graphics card :'( .  My plan is to buy the parts one by one so that i don't empty my wallet in one fell swoop.  I have already got an AMD FX 8350 processor and an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard.  My goal with this build is not to be able to make games run away in fear at the power of my machine but just to let them know who is in charge (in other words i want decent games to be able to be ran well but i don't have any need for parts like the GTX780 ti or Titan).  I have no monitor or mouse or keyboard so i am literally buying everything that i need.  I have certain idea for what i might want and I've made a mock build of what i want which i will list below.

Graphics card: Gigabyte GTX 770 GDDR5-2GB 2xDVI/HDMI/DP OC WINDFORCE 3X Graphics Card GV-N770OC-2GD

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1 TB HDD SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST1000DM003

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB 2x8GB DDR3 2400MHz PC3 19200 Desktop, Red CMY16GX3M2A2400C11R

SSD: Crucial M500 240GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD1

Optical Drive: Asus 24x DVD-RW Serial-ATA Internal OEM Optical Drive DRW-24B1ST (Black)

Monitor: ASUS VG248QE 24-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor 144hz 1ms

Mouse: Razer DeathAdder Ergonomic PC Gaming Mouse

Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow Ultimate 2014 Elite Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

Power Supply: Corsair Gaming Series 800-Watt ATX/EPS Bronze ATX12V/EPS12V 792 Power Supply GS800

Motherboard: ---Check initial paragraph---

GPU: ---Check initial paragraph---

So from what research I've done, it seems to me that this build will do what i would like it to do; however, if there was anything i could do to drop the price, seeing as it's roughly a $1500 P.C, I would love to know.  So what i am wondering is if there are any parts here that are over priced for what they do/if there is one that does the job better and i would like to know if there is anything i could improve on for the same price or less.  Thanks for any help and i would love to know what you guys come up with.

Looks good, but if you can, upgrade the GPU to a Tri-X 290. They destroy the 770 and they seem to be at great price atm. Good Luck  :)

I recommend you start over, completely from scratch. You don't need 16GB of RAM for gaming. You can get Windows 8.1 from G2A.com really cheap (Yes, its legit). There is really no point in getting a 144Hz monitor if your not going to use it to its full potential.

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler  ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($109.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card  ($379.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: Corsair 450D ATX Mid Tower Case  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($18.00)
Monitor: Asus VN247H-P 23.6" Monitor  ($166.47 @ Amazon)
Keyboard: Razer Blackwidow 2014 Wired Gaming Keyboard  ($92.38 @ NCIX US)
Mouse: Razer DeathAdder 2013 Wired Optical Mouse  ($65.98 @ SuperBiiz)

This ^, but he already has a FX 8350 and an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard so that would be replaced with that i5 and the MSi mobo.

That PSU is overkill if he's not going for crossfire. Even though it's on sale, the 750W is cheaper/

You said your already spending $1500, so might as well spend $70 for more performance...

with my set up there are some games that would be able to run at over 60 fps right? and if not then i would love to know because that could lower the price quite a bit. Also i would like to say thanks so much for the link to the site that sells windows eight that helped out a lot.

I personally got the black widow ultimate stealth for gaming and it is an amazing keyboard and was worth every penny. That's just my opinion tho.

You can run most games with that build.

Overall, it looks pretty well put together but I would suggest 4 gigs of ram, 16 is way too much in my opinion unless you are running some big software.

I've had 4gb ddr2 since 2006 and I can run anything better than most people.

I agree with most of what has been said. If your tight on money cut the Ram down to maybe 8 so that its more manageable. Second you could cut the SSD to save some money as well. The ASUS monitor is boss and I love it. Your 770 should definitely be able to handle everything you throw at it and your monitor will gobble up the FPS it puts out. Make sure the games you play actually can do 144 FPS though otherwise it is pointless. The PSU that you have currently is way more than you need. You probably only need a 650 watt one. Also a cooler master Hyper 212 evo might be a good add on. Thats all I really have to say. Also you could cut back the keyboard and mouse if you're tight on money.

I'm a student currently attending the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, if you attend or around there please don't hesitate to contact me!

Mudkip: CPU: i5-4670k; Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo; Memory: 16GBs Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz; Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X UD5H; GPU: ASUS DCUII 770 2GB @ 1254MHz; HDD: Seagate Barracude 1TB; PSU: CX750M; Case: ThermalTake A31 Chaser Thunder

Woa, $20 for a windows 8.1 key? That's kind of crazy lol.

I might just take the leap from 7 to 8 for that price :P
