Need a GPU-less Budget Build!

Guest

I ALREADY HAVE A GTX 760, SO FOR THOSE WHO WON'T READ BELOW, PLEASE DON'T RECOMMEND AN APU!

Hey guys, I'm trying to convince my stubborn dad that we need to get a new PC. We have some 2007 HP desktop with a GTX 760 thrown in, and everything but the GPU is a massive bottleneck. Luckily, he finally agreed to get a new PC (without GPU- we already have one), if I can get it SHIPPED for $500 or less.

Here's the trick- I need as strong a CPU as possible, because I really want to use Steam In-Home Streaming to my cruddy MacBook, and so I don't want it to be a bottleneck anymore. Right now, it's lucky to get 7-10FPS with the current Core 2 Duo :(

So, here's the 'must-haves'

At least a mid-end i5 CPU, or an AMD CPU if it's really strong.

8GB RAM

1TB HDD

Case doesn't matter, as long as it's aesthetically pleasing :D

NO OS- I HAVE MY OWN COPY OF WIN8.1! So that saves ~$100

No keyboard, mouse, monitor, or anything else but a GPU-less PC.

Thanks so much, I just get overwhelmed by PCPartPicker, and never can distinguish a reasonable difference between two similar parts!

But, since there's no OS or GPU, consider it a $800 build that I've already spent some money on :P

Shoot for an A10-7850K.

In the future you could CrossFire the A10 with an R7 240 but Linus does not recommend it.

I recommend the GA-A88X-UP4. It's 105 well-spend dollars.

Looks great! I might tweak some things, but thanks for the great start!

yep just make sure to keep the APU and get 2133 ram and that will be really good, that itself can run bf4 on low-medium settings @1080p

@OP You might also want a cooler, something like a CM Hyper 212 is a good, cheap choice.

I have a GTX 760, which is why I don't need a GPU!

Any changes to your CPU recommendation? Maybe something faster that's not an APU?

Thanks!

This is a great suggestion, but from personal experience I would stay away from the MSI 970a series of motherboards if you can. Especially with the 8350. The VRMs on the boards (g43 and g46) arent quite up to the task. I have an overclocked fx6300 on the g46 and its not doing so good.

No 6300, stay with the 8320.

It seems that there aren't a lot of options for 970a boards, pretty much just MSI and Gigabyte.

the board woodenmarker mention is better. also if you need to OC you have to step up to a 990fxa board.

So its best to leave the 8320 at stock in the 970a board.
