HBO has made an exclusive deal to offer content via Amazon Instant Video

HBO has entered into a multiyear pact with Amazon.com that makes the e-commerce company’s Prime Instant Video the exclusive online-based subscription VOD service to offer past seasons of the premium cabler’s originals like “The Sopranos” and “The Wire.” Terms of the deal were not disclosed; it covers only the U.S. Under the agreement, Amazon has exclusive SVOD rights for select HBO programming. That includes full seasons of “The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under,” “The Wire,” “Big Love,” “Deadwood,” “Eastbound & Down,” “Family Tree,” “Enlightened,” “Treme,” early seasons of “Boardwalk Empire” and “True Blood,” as well as miniseries like “Band of Brothers” and “John Adams.”

Deal marks the first time HBO programming has been licensed to an online-only subscription streaming service — and it’s a big win for Amazon in its rivalry with Netflix, the SVOD category leader. All the programming covered under the licensing deal with Amazon will remain on all HBO platforms, including HBO Go.

Previous seasons of other HBO shows that are currently airing on the cabler, including “Girls,” “The Newsroom” and “Veep,” will become available over the course of the multiyear agreement, approximately three years after airing on HBO.

It's not perfect, but it's a step in the right direction. No specific word on Game of Thrones though.

All of which those series are done for, for the exception of True Blood which is about to premiere its last and final season.

No. It's not perfect. It's not the right direction. It's of the devil (this sentence is a joke that is somewhat serious at the same time).

Exclusivity of content is anti-consumer.

By not putting Game of Thrones onto the service for new episodes, HBO will continue to lose money in the order of multiple millions, in my humble opinion.

But in this case it's a good thing because previously you had to have a HBO subscription through a cable or satellite provider to stream that content. So this IS a step in the right direction because it no longer requires a subscription to HBO.

But, the President of HBO will tell you that you are wrong. They don't care about GoT being pirated because so many people end up buying a regular HBO subscription to watch it. Besides, the cable and satellite providers pay HBO big money to keep current content from being made available via 3rd party services like Amazon.

Boardwalk Empire, one of the best TV show ever created, still has a season left. This is great news, but I am just praying for the day I can get HBO Go without a cable subscription.

I just wish they would do NEW episodes, HBO GO is a PITA... Half the time it doesn't work at all the day the episode comes out, the other half of the time it works for 10 minutes then buffers for 5. They must use my ISP...

I'm confused, they get money that way... because the only way to watch it would be to pay for HBO.

Why don't HBO just get their steaming service up and running. I would rather pay for that than to get more shows on amazon. With Net Neutrality going down the toilet. Netflix DVD retal model is looking really good.

All lot of people are, but think of the hundreds of different contracts that HBO has with different cable and satellite providers around the world. Those providers keep it in their contracts that HBO is not allowed to offer HBO GO ala carte.

It is up an running, it's called HBO GO. But, as I've said multiple times in this thread, their contracts with the cable companies prevent them from offering it as a stand alone service.

HBO GO was being offered in Europe as a subscriptions service. Why cant it happen here. No worries, HBO don't want my money.

The EU has much better consumer protection laws that don't allow business like cable companies to screw them over.
