Using External Drive to install OS?

Yeah it should work with no problems

About to help a friend build his first PC and he didn't want to use an DVD rom, so I'm going to let him borrow my External Dvd Drive to allow him to install windows. However I've never used an External DVD drive to install windows 8 on before let alone any OS. So was just wondering if it would be possible? The External DVD drive uses 2 USB connections. One for the PC to recognise it and another one to get more power if needed. Would it be detected by the BIOS as a DVD drive that I can boot off to start the installation? Or do we have to buy a DVD rom? Thanks in advanced! <3

Should be detected as a bootable USB option or CD/DVD drive option.

Yea as long as their's nothing else on the drive it will work, it would be just like using a usb flash drive to install the OS

You'll need windows 8 Enterprise to install it on an external HDD, all previous versions could but they now want you to pay 250$ more for it.

Yup, just copy the DVD contents into the root of the USB then boot into the USB when restarting. Should work fine :)
