Coil whine (or similar noise) while playing War Thunder

S1lentThund3r

This has been happing now since I've been playing War Thunder, but i'd really like to have some closure on whats causing this issue.

Every time I run war thunder and get into a game my card starts making a relatively quiet but high pitched sound, what I believe coil whine sounds like. But it dynamically changes as I move around the camera, the move objects in view the louder it is. Looking straight up at the sky almost gets rid of it, but not quite. This is the only game that it occurs on, every other game I've played (most being much more graphically demanding) doesn't get a whisper out of the card.

Its a Gainward GTX 780 Phantom GLH thats less than a year old, not OC'd past out of the box clocks.

Thoughts and fixes would be appreciated.

Hmm I do do get similar noise, but it comes from my headphones, in some games.

I think that there really isn't anything you can do, maybe change the psu.

And sometimes when that noise comes it's because of really high framerate, but that probably isn't the case with War Thunder.

Stock coolers - The sound of bare minimum

do you have v-sync off? I could be that your card is rendering 150+fps - some cards really don't like that.

Every GPU coil whines, some are far louder though, my 290 does it in easy to run games when around 250+fps, using msi afterburner to limit fps or vsync will rid of the issue in 99% of cases.

I've got all the trimmings turned on, so I'm usually bouncing between 50 and 75 fps. If anything higher FPS (ie. looking at less things on screen) actually makes less noise.

I also get coil whine from one of my GPUs with this game. I tend to get it at and around 150 fps and this is one of those games that despite whatever settings I put it on the FPS is really high, so I get some whine. Not a whole lot you can do about it, everytime I have tried to fix coil whine I have ended up breaking my card/motherboard.

Thanks guys, seems the general consensus is that its a common but not dangerous problem. Guess its just one of those strange but harmless things that crop up every so often.
