Microsoft renames SkyDrive to OneDrive

6 month after Microsoft was forced to rename SkyDrive in the UK to something else, due that they lost the case where British Sky Broadcasting Group sued Microsoft for the name, Microsoft has renamed it's service to OneDrive. And simply OneDrive for Business for the Businesses instead of SkyDrive Pro. Apparently, people in the U.K taught that SkyDrive was a provided service Sky Broadcasting Group, which lead to the lawsuit against Microsoft.

"Changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn’t easy," admits Microsoft's Ryan Gavin. "We are excited about what is to come, and can’t wait to share more."

One is too broad for a company to do anything (XBox One, CBC Radio One, BBC One, etc.). Beside the "One" is places before, not after.

The problem is not Microsoft, per se, even thought their legal team is supposed to to check for those before approving a name (I guess they skip Sky Broadcasting Corp), it's other companies trying to cash in on Microsoft. Like with Metro, in Windows 8, despite Metro being a overly used word (I think Microsoft could have won this case, but then again, every company with "metro" in their name, will go after them in the hope one of them wins, and then Microsoft will have to pay everyone with Metro in the name if they lose... disaster)

This is the second beta I've been in for Microsoft's cloud storage. I like them (and I did Windows 8 Consumer/Developer/Release Preview, and Windows 8.1 Preview. Not to mention Office 2013 Preview). I'm dedicated.

Well I have 25 gigs of SkyDrive for free (ms let early adopters keep 25, new ones got 7), plus 20 more gigs from subbing to Office 365, so I actually use it quite heavily.

Even used it to write my Bachelor, since having a .docx file shared on SkyDrive, means that several ppl can write in the same file at once, so none of that conflicting file business that dropbox has going on.

 

 

Its too bad, I liked the old name... MS getting hit badly lately, cant call the new Win8 interface "Metro" aswell, due to another silly lawsuit.
