So this morning I'm running in to an interesting problem with my ISP. And I'm not the only one with it as I have asked my neighbor and my Mom across town and they are having the same problem. Our mobile devices and PC's are connected to the same network interface and ISP, However only our mobile devices are getting internet connection. Upon troubleshooting I believe it's a provisioning issue at my ISP not allowing our PC's to connect. Thoughts? I cant think any other reason for it just short of a hardware/software issue that has effected more than one person at the same time..?

If your wireless devices and wired devices are all connected to the same wireless router then it cannot be a provisioning issue. As all your devices are behind the NAT and only your router would be seen. So if one device can connect in that scenario they all should be able to.

Another possibility is that some wireless devices will automatically start using your mobile data connection when a wifi connection goes to "Internet not available." So that would be something I would check on tbh.

I mean it could be something more complicated than that.If you are using the ISP gateway it could be they pushed a new firmware update that killed the lan ports. It wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened.

Also have you tried unplugged said router for 30 seconds and plugging it back in? Since phones are on most the time and computers are often powered off it could also be a leasing issue with your DHCP causing the machines to revert to a Apipa IP. Try getting on one of your machines and seeing what your IP address is. If on windows just right click your wired icon on the bottom right and go to network and sharing center. Then click the blue text next to connections which is the network you are on. Then select details and report you IP address (this is your local address we can't hack you)

Also another tidbit of information I am on my ISP's business side. They are both residential. I have a Static IP that I have trained my router to and have not been in to it in the past 2 or 3 weeks. They are both dynamic IP and possibly behind their NAT unless they have a DMZ in which case I'm unaware. I'm just finding it awfully odd that all 3 of us in different locations and different local networks are experiencing the same issue at the same time.

From what knowledge I have even over NAT some device information is sent in the packets. Data such as OS, OS version, manufacturer, what browser you're using, if it's a phone the mobile carrier and what brand phone among other data. So theoretically it'd still be possible to block service to devices except phones or tablets, etc. How or why this would happen is unknown to me.

The only similarities that I would imagine is that my phone being a Samsung and her tablet being a Kindle is that they are both Android based.

I real test would be to see if it's just Wi-Fi devices in general. Connect a laptop to the Wi-Fi and see if it gets internet or not.

The packet should only contain the following information:

So as you can see it does not care about HW information. You are probably thinking of those webpages that tell you about your pc, but that is done mostly via cookies and other code running on those sites.

You also have stuff like SSL that encrypt the data you are sending and encapsulate it.

You've got me there. I don't have anything to backup what is really just a theory I came up with.

That would be a great test I'd I had a laptop. However I do have a PC with WiFi that I have had hardlined so I tried that. And it's the same deal seeming to only effecting PC's

What are the chances you tried restarting and/or resetting the router? Even if the issue is neighborhood wide this is sometimes the fix.

I have power cycled both the router and modem at least once here to no avail. I am trying to DNS swap to see if that works. But I'm not hopeful as like I said my WiFi only devices are connecting just fine (i.e. iPod, the girlfriends Kindle, my T.V.) my next step is to eliminate the router and hard line straight to the modem and train my PC to the static IP and see where that takes me.

Ok so DNS swap came to a dead end. Hardlined my PC and trained it my static IP and DNS provided. Nothing. Until I reboot for about a minute. Now what are the real chances that I have a software issue along with others in my town causing us to not be able to connect on PC? If so what commonly would I check to have updated over night that would be causing this?
