Mugen 5 or Ninja 5?

Ok, I got a lilttle overzealous in my last thread. There's no way I can fit anything taller than about 162mm in my case, and maybe 140mm width.

 

Between these two, what is the general consensus?

 

If I get a new cooler, I don't want to worry about having to request an AM4 bracket, otherwise I'd get a Reeven Justice.

 

My only other option is an H80i, which I wouldn't mind. But I did set out with a specific budget goal and would like to stick with air.

 

I briefly considered the Cryo H7 Plus, but can't really find any reviews on it yet since it hasn't been out that long.

Nope and nope. Not nearly enough cooling capacity. Need something that can compete with a noctua 14 or 15 at minimum, with 120mm fan(s).

Only have 1x120 (intake front), 1x120mm (exhaust rear - delta coming), 2x80mm sides.

Old Raidmax Smilodon. Which, for the cheap af Kingwin case fans I put in (I was in a rush), is staying pretty cool.

1x Sandisk 256 ssd

1x WD Blue 2TB

2x WD Gold 1tb

2x burners

1x sata mobile rack sata hdd cage.

 

To be honest, I'm surprised I'm staying as cool as I am with these cheap fans. New fans are in transit, 1x120 Delta, 1x120 Noctua, 2x80 Noctua.

Yep, that's it. I'm an old fart with old parts.

 

have about 160-162mm height clearance. But only about 120-140 pcie clearance if I remember, due to the "video card cooling bar"...see attached pic with yellow.

I'll remeasure when I put new fans in, as it's in a very awkward location to disconnect all peripherals from. Plenty of space front-to-back though.

PCpartpicker only lists compatible parts so you can fit any of the coolers on the list below. I'm not sure what the exact measurements are but it can fit a large air cooler that is 163mm tall which is pretty much as big as it gets.

Thanks JM. I tried partpicker the other night. Even though they list as compatible, many of them give a "can not verify cooler and case compatibility" notes once both are added to the build sheet. Like the noctua D15, I'm almost positive there's no way in hell that would fit.

Was hoping new fans would arrive today. I won't be able to install them and measure until Tuesday now

Good to know! Yeah, that's a pretty uncommon/older case so I'm guessing that's why. I'm sure something like the Cryorig H7 or Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo would fit without any issues though. They are not large coolers and that is a Mid Tower case.

I run the CM Hyper 212 LED right now, which I'm pretty impressed by given how cheap, and roughly finished the base face is. 

I'm hoping to run one of the coolers in the topic. But if neither will fit, I'm going to try the new Cryorig H7 Plus. I was able to find 2 reviews of it. The English review (from 3 days ago on eteknix.com) showed some good results compared to about 20 other coolers, liquid and air. It beat the NH-D15S by 3c. But this was all on a delidded i7-7700k. They state:

I'm actually questioning the results slightly, as I find it hard to believe it performed so well compared to so many liquid systems. See the attached pic and tell me that doesn't seem odd. The Spanish review only compared it to three other coolers I think, so not much comparison.

I've owned the Hyper 212 LED in the past as well, it is a very impressive cooler, probably the best value option. But another good upper to mid-range cooler is the Cryorig H5 Ultimate. The H7 plus looks pretty good though.

H5 ulti doesn't look bad, but at 140mm width, I can think of a couple others I'd rather have. If the H7+ is this decent, it's a great value for the size. I still have about half a week before I order a new cooler, hopefully some more reviews pop up.I need to google and see if I can find regular H7 reviews, running something like dual Noctua fans.

 

Yeah, I'm quite impressed with my 212 for the cost. I'm wondering if I were lap the mounting surface on my 212, how much better temps would be. The machined face is extremely rough and uneven in spots. I used to work in a machine shop running mills and lathes. The finished surface on my 212 makes me gag .I'd seriously have to start with something like 80grit sandpaper.

I'm going to look up the AF 33 Es some more. Saw a review on my phone earlier on techbuyersguru for 120mm coolers, including what looked like decent performance from the Corsair H60. I don't think either will do the job, but you never know. As I said above, I need to get these new case fans installed and test temps.

 

I'll also be lapping the crappy mounting surface on my 212 LED. I anticipate about maybe a 2c drop with a smooth surface.

This means the Ninja 5 is brilliant for slient cooling but if you accept a louder system (higher RPM) the Mugen 5 is fine.

If you can fit a Ninja 5 go with it.

Thanks James. Looked up the Fuma B and it looks like a good performer too, but not sure if it will fit and I've read about ram clearance issues. But I don't think the ram issue, will be an issue.

 

I'm putting a Delta 120 in on Tuesday, so I'm fine with a little noise, especially since the cooler is contained in the case.
