Context: KIND OF NEW TO NETWORKING. GO EASY. I live on an island about a 1/4 mile off the shore. It is connected by a land bridge but is *somewhat* disconnected in terms of power and fibre / optic lines. There are lines and they are used but they are old. ISPs tell us that it could take years and years to bring fiber connections out to us, even though it is available less than a mile away for the residents on the mainland, and better direct satellite connections aren't coming anytime soon The fastest internet connection we get is 10mbps download on a good day, and as a PC gamer and a person with 5 family members constantly streaming Netflix and Hulu, I'm tired of it. I need a faster connection. No ISP has any improved options or implications of future expansion to my area.

That's when I got thinking: what if I could make my own? I have't had a project in a while. Last time I did something myself was my second PC build 2 years ago which was pretty lackluster. Regardless of if my problem is really so problematic, this seems like something technical and fun to do.

So my question to the forums is what could I do to BUILD myself a better internet connection? Could I use a tower (like the ones avail @ texastowers.com) and could I set up Ubiquiti dish to receive and send connections?

Basically what I'm asking is how can I begin to build a tower like deadmau has at his house?

Setup a wifi long distant rx tx to a landline isp connection

The guru Lman did a video on it, I do not believe he did a silly face as the thumbnail for that video but I can not remember.

Anywho, that wifi long distance will be your affordable ticket.

landline ISP connection where? do I need a place that gets good speeds to connect to? Gonna look up the video now. Thank ya.

EDIT: yeah he did a video on it a little bit. He has a couple videos about extending WiFi connections 12km or 25km or whatever it is but doesn't really go in depth on how to start it yourself or what to look into when starting it. Also assumes a preexisting land connection that I don't really have as of now.

Yeah an ISP connection on the mainland, should be cheap. All in is probably the

price of your $4k tower. That wifi is like 20km or 12m.

Here is the title

12 KILOMETER Wi-Fi - SUCCESS!!!

So how would I get the ISP connection on the mainland? Ask a friend to get the wifi and put a satellite on his house? Or...?

Yeah just rent roof space on a house, or a friend.

I dunno if this helps

Ok thanks. Could you think of any other way of getting an ISP connection on the mainland? Or maybe I could connect home sat to ISP sat?

Only other method is satellite but thats expensive, marine supply would sell those.

You could lay a cable, not wise though.

Not sure what sat's you can use. Google!

Perhaps use terms like

directional long distance wifi

Depending on your distance, you may not even need towers. Over 1/4 mile you could literally have $50 Ubiquiti Nanostations laying on their side pointed out the windows of two houses and have a 100mbps connection.

If you only need to get up 20-30' I would look into just burying a wooden pole into the ground, a utility company can come out and do it for you in an afternoon and it isn't very expensive.

The difficult part will be getting the source internet, if you have friends who live close on the mainland I would talk to their ISP about bringing a second service in on their property for you to shoot across. Most ISPs do not allow you to share service to a second residence, but perhaps with you paying for a second service they would be alright with it.

Have you check these guys for coverage? https://www.riseinternet.com/

The last option is paying the ISP to upgrade the lines for you, but it won't be cheap at all. A local farmer here paid to have fiber trenched in and cost him nearly $40k to go 1/4 mile.
