New Plex Server

Can I use an Apple Xserve as a Plex Server? Where can I get one? I want to run 10GbE. 4K streaming.

The xserve i doubt has the processing power to do 4k streaming.

Why would you want an Xserve if you don't already have one? 

 

The last generation came with 5500 series CPU's,  not sure if they support 5600 series which you'd probably need to go to for 4K transcoding...

They only support 3 drives, and pretty sure theyre really picky over the drives you use. If you use the Xserve Raid addon, that doesnt use SATA and again is limited in drives  you can use. 

They dont come with 10gbit by default, they come with 2 x 1gbit nic's, I think the 10gbit card is an addon. 

 

We have a few at work of the last 2009 model that we got for setting up management of our mac's but then we went another direction. Theyre essentially useless and have just been sitting unracked since because other servers like our HP's and Dell's just give so much more flexibility and expandibility.

Your better off with an old (within reason) pc stuff it with drives and a 10Gbe nic and your os of choice

Ive run it just fine on my Dell R610 which has 2 x X5650's in it.

But you can get just as much CPU score out of something like a Ryzen which you could put into a much smaller box and tower format. Generally much quieter and easier to put somewhere unless you have a rack already. You could also get a lower Intel CPU with iris graphics which can leverage the QuickSync technology for HEVC in Plex.
