Posted November 4, 2018 Ok, so I have gotten myself into a dilemma on whether I should get a xeon x58 processor, such as x5690. I have seen benchmarks and the x5690 is quite similar in performance to my current pick cpu, the r5 2600, especially when ocing the cpu. However, my only concern is that its an older platform, which I feel will affect me quickly in the future. PC: CPU: i5-9600k - CPU Cooler: be quiet! Posted November 4, 2018 in what universe would you downgrade from an R5 2600 to an old xeon? it is slower, the boards are generally pretty feature-less, the power draw is stupid, and the support is basicly zero. HA, i do not have one, but that is my current choice for my new build, but i'll take the answer as a no lmao PC: CPU: i5-9600k - CPU Cooler: be quiet! Posted November 4, 2018 If you have a board or can find a board for <80 $ or so it can be interesting, but the x5690 is stupid no matter what. Most expensive x58 CPU worth buying is the x5675, which is a very similar bin and, once overclocked, should match or beat the x5690. Also note that these do not have AVX support, some stuff no longer runs on these. Posted November 4, 2018 Do note that at the high end the tdps are either 95w or 130w, which is a far cry from the 2600's 65w (If I'm not mistaken). This means: Better cooler needed (especially if you decide to OC) Higher wattage PSU potentially just to be safe, I've seen spikes of up to 190W (albeit briefly) with my x5677 Good luck finding a cheap x58 board that isn't utter crap or a server board, though. I have a modified server board just because I couldn't afford an x58 mobo when my asus one broke.
