Time to upgrade?

I currently game on an old system that has an i5-2500k with a moderate OC to 4ghz. I did have a 560ti but it finally died after some years. I recently bought a gigabyte G1 Gaming 1060 6b. I feel like my cpu is is holding my new GPU back (bottlenecking). Is it time to upgrade the cpu? I was looking at the i5-(7600k-8600k). Also, my ram is ancient too at  1600mhz. Will upgrading to a higher ram speed help my performance?

Looks like you need an all new one except the gpu ofc.

If you are on a low budget go for a ryzen 5 cpu, b450 mobo. X470 is bettet but will set you back a couple more dollars.

If u have more money to spend or u really are on the blue side, the i5 8400 is best bang for the buck but i would personaly opt to the i5 8600K then.

But u are clearly in need of a new cpu haha

Honestly, for 1080p gaming, I don't think an upgrade is worth the money. High frequency is the king of gaming performance and since you have the 2500k OC'd already you probably would see a disappointing return in performance for the money spent if you upgraded to a new i5. An upgrade that would require you to get a new CPU, Motherboard, and RAM. Do you use your PC for no gaming purposes as well? Like multi-threaded productivity workloads? because that's where you would see the biggest gain in CPU performance. And I wouldn't really bother upgrading RAM if you have anything over 8GB, again the performance increase is negligible. You really only see performance gains with faster RAM on the new AMD Ryzen systems.

If the OP is gaming it's actually not really worth the upgrade at all. Frequency matters the most. Like I said if PC is used for multi-threaded productivity workloads then yes, upgrade. But if the PC is used for gaming the performance increase is definitely not worth it. I suggest watching this GN video.

My recommendation if the system is used primarily for gaming is to get a nice big air cooler and OC that CPU past 4.5GHz, it is easily obtainable. That will give you the biggest performance gain for the money spent.

I do have an hyper t4 on it right now but I was gonna get a h100i v2 AIO in the future. I did notice in some CPU hungry games it was struggling. I get really choppy frame rates in COD blackout for instance but in the MP and zombies it’s fine. Kind of a newb when it comes to OC’ing aswell

You don't necessarily need to spend that much on a cooler though, something like the Cryorig H5 would work perfectly. 

 

When you get choppy framerates how low are they dipping and what is your FPS? What is the refresh rate of your monitor?

It dips from a 95ish to as low as 55. It’s only in the blackout mode, I’m guessing it’s more cpu hungry than the mp and zombies modes? I get 130+ in those modes. It’s 60hz. That’s with all settings on low for blackout and medium for np and zombies

I mean on a 60Hz panel I wouldn't bother too much anyway, and since you really only see it in that title under specific circumstances then I definitely wouldn't worry about it.

 

In terms of not being super comfortable with trying to OC there are tons of great videos out there. We all start somewhere. 

 

Ultimately an upgrade is your decision, if you have the money burning a hole in your pocket then go for it but just don't expect crazy performance gains while gaming if you get a new i5. And especially on a 60Hz panel, I would bet any money that if you didn't have an FPS counter on you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between your system and one with an i5-8600k. I can barely tell the difference on a 144Hz panel between my i7-6700k and GTX 1060 6GB, versus my system with an i7-8700k and a GTX 1080.

 

I think the best value for money would be spending like $50 on a big air cooler, OC'ing your CPU past 4.5Ghz and if you don't already have an SSD then get one. These are just my opinions based on what I know, it is your decision at the end of the day.

Would u not recommend overclocking over 4ghz with a hyper t4?

What are your temps under load right now? Anything above 85-90 degrees C is getting hot.

high is 54C while gaming

 

i just OC'd it to 4.4GHz, under 100% load the highest core was 73c. i dont usually do anything that uses full load

Those temps are good then, no need to swap coolers, If you're not seeing over 85 degrees C then don't worry about it.

IMO, stick with the 2500K until the motherboard dies then it'd be worth the upgrade considering the cost of replacement 1155 boards, as it is the 2500K can still hold its own, moreso when OCed & paired with a good GPU.

Oh yeah, way past due, grab a latest gen 6 or 8 core chip, doesn't need to be " K " series sku, decent Mb and you'll see huge gains in all games.

it could with a bios update but i7 3770 is overpriced/hard to find. if im gonna spend money on a cpu ill just get an i5-8600k even if it means i have to get a new motherboard and ram.
