Well depending on what you're coming from, a so called 'gaming router' could come with more channels and may be better in terms of range and overall wireless stability. I know I came from a default one from my cable provider, and I upgraded to a Nighthawk by Netgear and did see an improvement in overall speeds, synthetically tested at least. But don't be fooled just cuz it's got gaming in the title, it's becoming a marketing ploy but sometimes there are higher quality routers that do have tangible benefits.

Gaming routers are kinda bull shit. 

 

So here is the deal. Most of them have Quality of Service options that prioritize gaming packets. The fact is, a really good router can also do this. They generally slap gaming on the box and hike the price a bit. I wouldnt buy a router just because it says "Gaming" on the box. You buy one that does what you need. Thats not to say that gaming routers are bad routers, they can be good as long as the firmware is worth a shit.
