i purchased a core 2 extreme Qx6800,and it won’t run in my intel 02 lga 775 motherboard. Will a core 2 extreme QX9650 work or will it have the same issue.

Probably wont work, depends on the board, you should check the CPU support list first, or update the BIOS to the latest.

LGA 775 was a weird socket i agree check the compatibility list for that mobo

IIRC the core 2 extreme and quads were only supported on a bunch of the "gaming" and "high quality" boards. It's unlikely that a oem intel board would support it. (If that's what you're referring to.)

 

LGA 775 boards are super cheap. I just bought one on ebay the other day for ~$60. (And it has support for quads and extreme processors, I made sure because that's what I'm installing.) (My other 775 with a 9650 is running at 4 GHz.)

 

Then again, you may just need a bios update. You'll have to look at the specification page for your specific board.

It could be two things, one is weird compatability of lga775, the other one is that it cant deliver the power the cpu needs

What's the brand and model of the motherboard.

 

Brand and model should be somewhere in the motherboard. Take this Asus sample:

The name is intel desktop board 2 E210882 I think.

It's Intel DQ45CB E30148-207.

That's weird.  It actually supports 65nm C2D and if I'm not mistaken QC CPUs are of the 65nm variety.

It's most likely because of the TDP. Core2 Extreme Quad core CPU's have a TDP of 130W while the highest TDP CPU's on that list are 95W.

Core2Quad Q6600 goes for $12 on eBay and can be OC'ed to 3.0Ghz with a piece of tape over a pad on the CPU (Google the BSel mod)

It's about the best bang for your buck that you can put in prebuilt LGA 775 systems with generic intel boards.
