z370 vs z390

so what is the difference really? i am going to upgrade to the i7 9700k and im going for some high overclocking. im buying the maximus formula x or xi, the thing is i have no idea what the difference is between them

so its nothing more then some usb ports and wifi.. ive just heard people say you could overclock more and stuff like that

Basically. It's that and guaranteed BIOS support from the get-go. You won't be able to run a 9th gen on Z370 without updating the BIOS. The top end boards have better VRMs for the 9900 also.

When you buy a board, you can usually ask the retailer or e-tailer to update it for you, but it's entirely up to you of course. Or get a board that can flash w/o CPU.

well the x, and xi is almost the same price by me. so cant see why i shouldent go for the xi, and i might buy a 9900k. ill wait until some benchmarks come out

its not the USB ports, The biggest thing is the addition of Native support for USB 3.1 Gen 2 instead of motherboard vendors needing a 3rd party chip to enable that support.

Asus has a feature called BIOS flashback which allows you to update the firmware without a CPU installed.

What it means for the USB ports is that they were already there, they just used a 3rd party chip to make them work since they were not natively supported on the intel chipset. With Z390, USB 3.1 gen 2 is now officially supported by the intel Chipset. Native support is always better as the drivers and firmware for it are included in the chipset drivers instead of 3rd party drivers/firmware for the chips.
