Another 280x vs. 770 Thread

Hmmm, my personal choice would go to the 4GB 770, because I would SLI it in the future and because of G-Sync. Since you play NVIDIA sponsored games surely go for a 770. Also if you plan to mod Skyrim a lot, definitely 4GB.

price is the only determiner for this poll really, I'd go 280x but the issue is that it costs WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH because of stupid cryptomining

In that case, the 770 is faster in BioShock and and Assassin's Creed, but 2GB VRAM may limit it going forward.

You said 1080p so it doesnt really matter if you have 2 or 3 gb vram.

 

770 is cooler, quiter and eats less power. Also you may have g-sync later on.

Personally I would go 280X, one because I prefer AMD as a company, and I feel that the extra 1GB of VRAM is important going into the future. However, the 770 is faster at BS and AC4 at 1080p as Kepler is more optimised for gaming at lower resolutions, but I think the 280X will keep its performance level for longer. The 770 may start to drop off once games use up memory. (Like the 660 Ti vs 7950)

Because it's 1080p , not even 1440p with a shot ton of mods use more than 2.5 gigs

Kepler is better at 1080p, so my choice is with the GTX 770.

The 770 can use over its 2gb, although its not done often at 1080P even 1440p the 2gb is not a problem. The 770 can use pretty much all of its vram in the 4gb buffer although there are not many test showing it. The 4gb version is for people who want to sli. Do not get a 4gb version of a card unless you plan to sli as you will run out of pixel pushing power before you max out the frame buffer.

At less than 3x SLI you're still likely to run out of GPU power before you run out of frame buffer unless you get an insanely good overclock on the memory and core clock, luck comes more into play tbh but even then you'd be a lot safer getting a 280x

Ya. But with the prices of the 280x and the fact these two perform almost identically to begin with i dont see much reason to go with the more expensive card that performs so similarly.

The 280x doesn't use a Hawaii GPU, if I remember correctly, therefor you will have equal heat and noise output of your standard 7970 (GHz Edition)
