So I had to switch to Linux since Windows got a virus and corrupted everything. I installed F@H told it to use the GPU to fold, and it's not working. My PPD is slashed in half, the GPU doesn't fold, and it isn't even pinning the CPU to the wall like it should. I was going to put Windows back on it, but this is stupid.

I had a similar issue when I was folding on Mac OS, it turns out GPU folding just doesn't work on Linux and Mac OS, only CPU based.

In that case, I'm still getting half of my usual 1.8-2K on the CPU alone.

Maybe leave it for a while and check back. PPD tends to vary a bit over time. Also check the CPU slots if its using all of them. Change it in configuration from -1 to how many cores/threads you have.

It's using everything, and my PPD tends to stay around 1.7-2K. Only time it ever goes this low is when I have it on light or medium (on Windows).

IIRC Linux (and Ubuntu for that matter) both handle F@H vastly differently compared to Windows. GPU folding is currently supported best on a Windows platform (there has been word of GPU folding coming to Linux but I haven't seen anything on it), whereas CPU WUs are most favoured on Linux / Ubuntu (especially in the realm of bigAdv WUs, not sure about the smaller projects).

In short, unless you're aiming at the large bigAdv projects (CPU only folding), you're better off with Windows as a general F@H member.

I hate viruses so much.

EDIT: What stinks is my computer is so much faster with Xubuntu on it. But I'd rather play my games and fold.

OK, so some info... :)

GPU Folding IS supported on Linux, with the following caveats:

1 - You need version 7.x client

2 - It is still BETA so you are on your own for support

3 - ONLY supports CUDA (aka NVidia) at the moment

4 - You are responsible for getting all the proper drivers working (again, the BETA thing)

To date this has been very much a problematic setup and most don't bother.

CPU Folding on Linux/Ubuntu will typically yield 2% to 5% better PPD then a Windows CPU folder, without any tweaking. Less overhead on the OS. With tweaking you can get this even further.

Reasons for Folding on Windows - ease. LOT more people are comfortable with Windows then Linux. And the driver support for GPU makes GPU Folding on Windows as simply as CPU folding.

I guess my computer is backwords, since it's doing worse on Ubuntu than Windows as a CPU folder.
