Coworker lost ~25% of contacts--WHY?

I don't think this needs to be said, but i'll say it anyway: its an iPhone.

 

The contacts aren't unselected... so where did they go? 

 

Why did they just disappear?

 

How can this happen? LMK, THX!

Sounds like he removed an icloud, google, or some other account that had cloud contacts tied to it, and when he removed the account it removed those contacts with them (many of them are never saved locally on the device unless it's the primary account.) 

 

oh wait it's an iPhone? That's a feature, not a bug. (Sarcasm)

No idea, ever since iOS 5 and iCloud have been a thing I have never lost a contact. 

 

Contacts don't just disappear, they have to be deleted from somewhere that interfaces with the Contacts app.

If you remove an account it'll pull whatever contacts it has with it, sometimes it gives you the choice to keep them but it depends on the account type or something, haven't deleted accounts off my phone in ages.
