Hello guys,

I am just about to attempt my very 1st pc build. After alot of research and for what I want it for I decided to copy a popular you tube streamers gaming pc set up.

I have the intel i5 8600k and a 1060 graphics card with a z370 motherboards  with cpu cooler and 6 fans.

In the you tube video the guy overclocked it from 3.6 to 4.7ghz

I'm just wondering if this is really nesessary?

What benefits would I get from doing  that?

With a 1060, playing games probably won't get a lot of benefit from an overclock.  If you have a higher end GPU maybe you would.

What will you use your computer for?

I recommend avoiding streamers setups.

Anyway, what's your budget?

and what monitor do you have/want to buy?

is it free-sync or g-sync?

Edit: Also, what are you gonna use the pc for?

it does give more CPU performance, but unless you're also streaming, your gtx 1060 will be the limiting factor of performance, aka bottleneck and overclocking the CPU wont do anything noticeable in the in-game performance department.

In general overclocking really is not needed. If you struggle playing certain games get a better more powerful graphics card. You will get the most gain from there.

Most of the time people overclock for 3 reasons:

1) Get more of a useful life from ageing hardware (I fall here 3770k stock is 3.4, I am running 4.5)

2) Because they are performance junkies and want that sweet epeen.

3) Trying to break world records.

Overclocking is done at your own risk and can cause further issues either in the near future or down the line. You are running something out of spec so it is possible to shorten its lifespan. Plus you have cooling and power to take into consideration as well.

the whole point of the K series CPUs is that theyre unlocked for overclocking.

nowadays there's little reason NOT to overclock as its pretty idiot proof and safe. most of the decent motherboards have even got a 1-Step overclocking type button in the BIOS.

As long as you have a semi-decent CPU cooler and are happy with the extra power consumption and heat production then absolutely overclock it. it will make a difference, just not a huge jump.

As for the GPU, theres little reason not to at least increase the powerlimit. its basically free performance and the safety margins on them are such that its pretty damn safe. some cards like my 1080ti Strix even require you to use software overclocking utilities to reach the factory spec speeds, as the hardware has to be limited to nvidia official spec when they sell it for some reason. again it wont make it perform like a better card, but 5-10% is possible... for free (ignoring power costs)
