New build no post

Go to solution Solved by MCManiac52,

Update in case anyone's interested or if anyone finds this thread in the future. The CPU was faulty. I got a new CPU, installed it and the machine works perfectly.

Just got most of the parts for my new system (missing case and SSD) so I figured I'd put it all together on the motherboard box to make sure everything works.

The system powers on fine but never posts. I've tried with no gpu and no ram. All have the same result. No beeps, no display, nada.

I know the system is powering on and staying on as the GPU fans and LEDS start spinning. The CPU fan doesn't spin, but the cpu is warming up. The board doesn't switch on if there's no cpu.

Specis:

Asus prime z370-a

i7 8700k

Strix GTX 1080

16GB vengeance LPX 2400MHz

Corsair RM650x

The board has LEDs on it to indicate how far through post it is (CPU, RAM, VGA, BOOT) none of these light up at all. The RGB LEDS on the back of the board light up as soon as the PSU is turned on, as does the white power led on the board. Both the on board power button and shorting the pins will power it up.

I ilke trains.

yup checked all the cables a couple of times. Board issue is what I was leaning towards but not 100% on board or cpu.

board is more likely.

if you bought it from a propper store, call their support, chances are they'll be helpful enough to get things going.

ordered off of amazon so should be good I think. Or am I better off going with Asus directly?

if you've ordered off of amazon, return it and buy a new one.. its the best way honestly.

Okay I'll probably do that then, will try a couple more things first just to be sure, I'll update here when/if I have a solution.

Honestly I would check to make sure your cpu fan is connected properly and in the cpu fan header and not a system fan header. Had an issue once where the pc wouldn't turn on because the cpu fan was plugged into a system fan header and not a cpu fan header.

tried both CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT for the fan. No luck on either. The fan works fine if plugged into the GPU's fan headers so it's probably a bad board

Why would you plug the CPU fan into the header on the GPU?

Depending on the motherboard, if there is no fan connected to the CPU_fan, it will make the board think no CPU cooler is installed -- which would throw warnings or prevent the system from POSTing / booting.

Can you upload picture(s) of how your system is hooked up?

Also, it might be a good idea to check the CPU socket for any bent/damaged pins.

CPU pins are fine, checked it a couple of times with a light and magnifying glass. I only used the GPU headers to test that the fan was working, I wasn't going to run it like that ? From my experience most motherboard has always posted and flashed up with CPU FAN error, but I don't know for sure on this one

Hahaha okay, okay.

I don't remember (even though I use mainly use ASUS motherboards), but I think the Q-LEDs (CPU, DRAM, GPU, Boot) runs through first...

If it gets stuck even before the CPU check, then you won't see those light up.

Again, if you can upload some pictures of your "motherboard box" set-up, that might give us some clues.

Yeah the Q-LEDS have never done anything. Adding to my previous comment about the fan headers. I've just tested plugging 3 fans into the board. 2 Corsair SP120s and the Noctua NFA-15 that came with the cooler. All 3 are PWM. The noctua fan never works on the cpu fan headers. the corsair fan does, tried both fan and opt, the corsair fan works, noctua doesn't. The noctua one does work from the gpu. The 3rd fan is on a case header and never works. Will post pictures shortly

So update to this. I've received the new board. Plugged everything in aaaand same result. Tried a different power supply to with no luck. Any other ideas guys?

My guess is the BIOS needs an update. Depending on how long a board has been sitting in storage between manufacturing and sale, the default BIOS loaded onto it can be out of date and not support more recent CPUs.

I had a guy come to me with similar issues in his new Ryzen build. His X370 board (despite being brand new from Amazon) was operating on a BIOS from last year and didn't support the 2nd gen Ryzen CPU he was trying to set it up with. I was able to drop in one of my 1st gen Ryzen chips, update the BIOS, and then finish setting up the system for him with his 2nd gen chip.

He also sent the first board back to Amazon before getting a replacement and having the same issues. When the same happened with the second board he came to me.

I wish that was the case but Z370 only supports 8th gen intel cpus, and the 8700k was the first of the 8th gen cpu's, so there isn't an older cpu I can install to try :(

Ah. I see. It definitely shouldn't be the BIOS then.

And it also shouldn't be any other kind of motherboard problem since you've tried two separate boards (unless you're amazingly unlucky).

Have you tried different RAM? I feel like it could only be the RAM or the CPU at this point.

tried with and without ram - exactly the same outcome each time. My money is on a dead cpu, returning it tomorrow :(

I know this is super basic but I notice that you don't have the CPU power connector in frame in those pics you uploaded. The CPU power plug is definitely in, yeah? (The 4/8 pin cable which gets plugged in between the board's I/O and CPU socket usually)

If you have that plugged in ok, and the board doesn't even beep when you start it up with your POST speaker plugged in and without RAM then, yeah, my money would probably have to be on the CPU too.

Yeah definitely plugged in, it's 100% the CPU, gonna take it back and get a new one rather than used this time.
